Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Now Thunderbolt Ross is back and the MCU finally can have a Jonah, when will they team up at last?

I liked that apparently MCU Hulk isn't wholly subject to the bullshit "nope he gets angrier and wins anyway" excuse.

I'm so glad Thunderbolt Ross is returning; he was so very well cast in The Incredible Hulk, and it allows other elements from that movie to return down the line, like Tim Roth's Abomination who I also thought was really well cast.

It also seems like Civil War opens with a Bat Man Cold open like Age Of Ultron, who do we think they'll be fighting? Presumably it would be something to do with Bucky.

Hmmm... A.I.M. With MODOK zipping about? We know the brothers love that character.

I think they'd have to explain who MODOK is first. Age of Ultron set up Strucker in the Winter Soldier, and the Nazi Nobleman concept with him is simple. Opening with MODOK would have too many viewers wondering "wait, what, who is this giant floating head??"

Although Age of Ultron did proceed to do one of the most egregious cases of They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character of all time with Strucker. Winter Soldier introduced him in a workable way, but Age of Ultron just dashed him into the ground like a damaged b-17.

No, its cool

Ultron replaced him with a Life Model Decoy and hid the real Strucker on Hydra Island

I understand a doombot is an acceptable answer. Wasn't that the deal with Black Bolt in WWH?

The easy solution to this is in the Batman Cold Open NOT killing The Machine Designed Only Killing.

Can we please make it cannon that MODOK can't actually spell?

At least AIM is already established, but if you wanted a strictly pre-established villain, you could have the Avengers turn up and shoot The True Mandarin to death while knee capping the Leader.

They could just do another attack on a Hydra base, as a way to directly compare how the tactics of the team contrast with the previous one.

Reading that link to the costume concept art from last page, it explained what the Tron Lines in Widow's suit were: electrical wires for her shock batons. What I expected them to be, honestly.

Be funny if Civil War begins right where Age of Ultron ended. Literally, that same split-second.

Wouldn't it be kind of repetitive to see the Avengers attack a hyrda base again? I'd like to see them be proactive against a force other than Hyrda for once.

Credible threats to the Avengers at the moment that wouldn't require much intro would be, hmm, A.I.M. the Ten Rings, Hyrda, Klue, Baltroc or Snowflake. Though, like The Winter Soldier, the batman cold open could introduce an entirely new villain.

One of those concept arts for Quicksilver makes me think of Kotetsu from Tiger And Bunny.

Giant robots have a delightful asset of never needing an explanation. They just turn up, threaten a city, and then super heroes arrive and beat them up. No one asks questions.

That's what giant robots are for.

I would love it if the films just kept putting in off screen characters with Kang as their last name through history.

Stan Lee as Kang?

EDIT: Giant Monsters? I guess they don't simply some one is building them, but that just has horrific implications about the inhabitants of Earth.

GAMMA Monsters though, I could tolerate having no explanation.
