Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

You know, Hank Pym's Wasp costume might be a good model too (sort of reminiscent of the Falcon costume).

I don't think she will be Wasp as a superhero now(maybe IW or phase four?)but I hope she at least gets to do what Pepper did(that was such a missed chance to have Pepper get her own armor) and have the suit and be badass at least once and punch the bad guy even if it's over quickly. That poster made me a bit sad when I noticed she was the only female on it. We really needed some female superhero movies in phase 2 or 1 or more female characters at all. If Loki dies in Thor 3 I want him to return as Lady Loki in IW and after she dies he can come back as Kid Loki.

[up][up]That's actually a really good idea.

I've seen someone suggest if Yellowjacket dies or goes to jail, then she could modify his suit and use it for herself (since it has wings and stingers).

Out of curiosity, is there a good picture of Falcon's new red costume floating around online anywhere?

I've got fanfics for Frozen, Spectacular Spider-Man, Crash Bandicoot, and Spyro the Dragon.

I was kinda disappointed, in retrospect, that Falcon didn't show up at the battle against Ultron. All the other new Avengers were there, but Falcon just seems to kinda come out of nowhere.

All in all he seemed like a fairly last-minute addition.

You heard him. He was leaving the Avengering to Steve. Someone has to keep up the Bucky Hunt.

Rhodey doesn't have a super-important plotline he needs to advance between the previous Iron Man film and the nonexistent next one. His schedule was free to play cavalry.

Well...makes sense, doesn't it?

For all its flaws the first Cap film was rather solidly written, and Agent Carter showed their success with The Winter Soldier isn't just a fluke.

[up]I actually like the first Cap the best of all origin movies. It gets extra-credit because it had the hardest task of them all, with all the baggage which came with the character.

I still wonder if he might have been a last minute addition if only because Mackie seemed very distressed in interviews that he wasn't going to be in the movie. I guess it could just be Lying Creator / Trolling Creator but he has a very good poker face if that's the case.

He is an actor. His job is to lie.

Sure but not all of them are good at doing it in interviews. Paul Rudd for example is terrible at it.

Of note: Joss mentioned in the commentary for the first movie that one of his executive obligations was that he had to work a fight between Iron Man and Thor into the film. He set it up the way he did, with the pair fighting over their respective authority over Loki and the Tesseract, because he didn't want to do a cop-out where one of them is brainwashed or crazy or something and the other spends half the fight holding back and just trying to bring him back to his senses; if they were going to fight, Joss wanted them to f*cking fight, something where both sides were ready to go all-in because they believed themselves in the right.

The reason I find that interesting is because that cop-out Brainwashed and Crazy excuse for Let's You and Him Fight went on to be used for Age of Ultron to set up Iron Man v. the Hulk.

[up]The difference is that Ironman can't effort to go soft on Hulk. He doesn't need to worry about hurting Hulk either. Ironman vs Brainwashed Hulk can be as violent and "real" as you want, while Ironman vs Thor (with either brainwashed) would have one of the sides pulling punches.

One thing I really liked about that fight was how it showed exactly what beast Hulk is. Ironman with an special armor pretty much broke himself on him, and Hulk was barely hurt by the end.

But it works there because Tony knew he couldn't hold back, because it's the Hulk. In fact, he was fighting harder than he would in almost any other situation, what with calling in Veronica.

I think being in a city also helped.

Tony could totally go soft on the Hulk if he was rampaging around a park or a mountain or something. A metropolitan area has much more significant consequences for failure.

[up]That influenced, but Hulk was clearly outmatching Hulkbulster Ironman physically. I really don't think Ironman had much choice but to go all out.

That's like the plot of every other big crossover comic of the 70s and 80s. "THE BEYONDER/THE LEADER/LOKI/DOOM/JONAH JAMESON IS CONTROLLING THE HULK! WHAT DO WE DO???"
