Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Hank Pym is the mad scientist. Tony Stark is the mad industrialist.

I would say mad engineer. Tony has shit for business sense; even he acknowledged this when he put Pepper in charge of his company. He's much more comfortable in a workshop tinkering with his tools than a boardroom.

Tbf, that is a major plot hole that really can't be ignored. Especially in a universe that was really trying to be as realistic as possible.

What is?

[up][up][up]Merchandisers love it.

Whedon confirms in addition to Captain Marvel, he'd tried to get Spider-Man included in the ending as well.

I really want to see Spider-Man in Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Especially, I want to Tony Stark make Peter Parker feel grossly inadequate because of just how much richer he is. evil grin

I don't know how I'd feel about just dropping cameos in at the end like that.

It'd be cool to see a Carol Marvel but chances are the actress would change by the time they go to the movie.

The more I think about it the more Natasha and Bruce makes sense to me. She wants someone she to allow her to be comfortably intimate without commissioning her mission, and he wants someone who wont be terrified by him.

If the avengers managed to actually make the Hulk reliably not murderous, (Which is a long stretch, as that would require a persistent understanding with the Hulk, and for him to be made immune to mind control) I could see them be quite happy together.

But Bruce and Nat were never going to run away together.

Notably, when he did try to take her up on her offer of running away together, she pushed him down a hole.

This may be related to why he didn't go back for her.

[up][up][up][up]The story from Feige is funny because apparently Whedon wanted to shoot the special effects shots for Captain Marvel and then only cast and film an actual actress as they got closer to production, and they hated that idea.

The way we reveal Scarlet Witch [in costume] at the end of the movie? Those were Captain Marvel plate shots. Joss said, ‘We’ll cast her later!’ And I said, ‘Yeah Joss, we’ll cast her later.’ [Whispers to an invisible associate who isn't Joss] ‘We’re not putting her in there!’

The way that they end on a training facility of sorts for Avengers and at least one of the new recruits has villainous tendencies

So its a sort of academy

for avengers

Saw Iron Man's armor for Civil War.

...

...Well, it's not that I hate it. It's just that I was expecting to see this by now...

I'm actually kinda disappointed. sad

Also, Bane wants to be The Punisher.

Yay or nay? I'm thinking yay...smile

Giving Captain Marvel a proper intro in a solo film feels more appropriate to me anyways.

I figured if they were going to have Carol Danvers cameo before her solo movie, it would be as a soldier of some kind (a la Hawkeye, in a way), not a superhero, which makes a bit more sense in Civil War than it does in Ultron (in Ultron, the only scenes where I would see her working is during the evacuation at the end, and even so that was way past the point of cameo time).

If they had had jets flying around you could have had some radio chatter

"Warbird, on your six"

or something.

Pretty scant cameo material but a fun thing for nerds to stand up and point a quivering finger at the screen before howling like a ghost

"oooooOOoooOOOoooOOoo. I understood that reference."

Far from wanting to diss Whedon, but it sounds a little bit like Feige had to reign him in or the movie would have become a cameo-pile

It also sounds like Feige was making a joke.

Mmm....apparently they have cast Martin Freeman for Civil War.

I wonder what his role will be.

And if I will ever get a fourth season of Sherlock.

Wow, they really are getting all the Sherlock actors.

I'm guessing he's going to be a new Doctor Faustus.

[up][up][up] They got Bilbo Baggins?

Man, how do these MCU casting agencies get these guys?

Also, Tom Hardy as The Punisher.

Hell yeah or hell no?

A black suit for Iron Man wouldn't really fit here. It instantly gives off the vibe of an antagonist and I'm sure they're gonna at least try to make it more balanced.

Maybe Freeman is Captain Britain?
