Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

I will bet you 10 dollars and my left testicle that if they decide to introduce Judson Jakes into the MCU, he will get better treatment as a villain than Von Strucker just did.

With a hilarious name like Judson Jakes, he damn well better.

EDIT: Okay so Judson Jakes is apparently a giant mole from outer space, which makes him better than Generic Nazi #352 on principle.

Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.

@ swanpride

And Big Hero 6 has been steadily climbing the ladder, too. It is too bad that Disney messed up the promotion and release of the movie so badly, but it is still the second highest grossing movie they made in the current era after Frozen.

Speaking of Big Hero 6, any reason why Disney made it themselves?

[up]Apparently it's because the comic it's based on is terrible so they didn't wanna play up the Marvel thing too much.

Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.

Meh.

Strucker is just another super soldier for the pile.

Oh except he's a Nazi! Like Zemo and Red Skull and probably several others I can't remember.

But he does have a monocle.

Because german. Got to get that mad kraut bling in there. Maybe we can put a pointy hat on him too.

Captain America has more relevant things to be fighting. Like the youtube.

Judson Jakes is not the most ridiculous name in superhero comics. He probably doesn't crack the top 30.

Dopants: He meant what he said and he said what he meant, a Ninety is faithful 100%.

I love the dumb alliterative names in comics.

Like Superman and all of his LL love interests.

I think my favorite thing about the L alliteration is that apparently Siegal and Shuster were big into Supes/Lex being a thing.

Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.

The thing is

If Lex's villainy and stealing cakes and such is just an attempt to get Superman's attention

He's not that much worse than golden (silver?) age Lois.

Silver. Golden Age Lois, best I can remember, was far less...obsessive, I guess? Like, proving Clark was Supes was still a thing, but she was still a journalist first and foremost.

Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.

Yeah, silver age Lois was a monster.

She did steal Superman's heart though. Not even Carmen Sandiego could claim that.

[up][up]A very, veeeeeeeeeeeeery annoying monster, IMO. She was one of the things I'm actually glad they changed up with the reboots. (Well, the Post-Crisis one, anyway...)

@Keeping Nick Fury alive to preserve diversity. That is a reason to keep him around and one I'm passionate for, but I remember walking out of The Winter Soldier thinking it 'narratively' made sense, but now I can't remember why.

Watch Age Of Ultron, I found myself wishing Maria Hill had his role.

[up][up]Now a Filipino Spider-Man/Peter Parker would be a good step forward.

I think my favorite thing about Lex Luthor is that he took 40 cakes. FORTY! That's as many as four tens! And That's Terrible. [lol]

[up]Or maybe it was just so obscure, Disney felt comfortable enough to adopt it.

I have heard it said by many that it's actually kinda racist. So.

I am totally there for a Filipino Spider-Man. Or Filipina. Whichever.

Big Hero 6 is more obscure than Guardians of the Galaxy used to be.

[up] That.

The Guardians get to have their own ongoing title, and have for a long time. They've more or less become the face of Marvel Cosmic.

Big Hero 6 was exiled to the realm of being supporting characters who only show up for a story or two in other people's comics long ago.

Let's say it like this:

Guardians of the Galaxy got to be the main force going into the Cancerverse with Thanos to fight Lord Mar-Vell in a cosmic event that had been building up for years with heroic sacrifices, betrayals and Galactus helping. They're part of a period of Marvel history that's usually considered some of the best stories they've ever done(Cosmic Marvel, all the way from Annihilation to Annihilators).

Big Hero 6 got to help Spider-Man fight Doc Ock once.
