Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

For me, that’s a better resolve because it’s his decision, Bruce’s decision, but it’s her decision to throw him down a fucking well! And what I love about that is that she has laid herself bare and said, 'I want to be with you and have a life and a romance with you', and when push comes to shove, she has to be a hero, and the way she is a hero is by being duplicitous, by being a spy. And that, for me, is really exciting; that’s a pure character moment.

Looks like Tobias was right. That's gotta get old eventually.

Funny how Age of Ultron boosted my hype for the upcoming Black Panther film. Serkis really made his all-too-brief screentime memorable.

I can't wait for Ant-man. I still think that it might end up being a really, really good movie.

[up]Yeah. Despite them glossing over Pym in favor of Scott Lang, the movie itself looks to be pretty fun.

Alright, I've made an uneasy peace now with the ANT-MAN film not having Janet as it's protagonist, I'm now officially excited.

Also, @the Last page, Carol's pompadour hairstyle is very achievable in real life, but it wont withstand a good breeze, which makes her having that hair style and being a flying brick amusing to me.

On the note of Kamala Khan; part of me suspects she may end up as a character in the MCU's runaways. Given that the 616 comics are currently trying to push the Runaways as now having a rotating roster. (Can't wait for that book by the way)

Of course that depends if The MCU Runaways ends up as a film or a TV series, I know we've heard that they're working on potential treatments for both. Khamala's powers would be a right pain to do on a TV budget, unless you limit her to changing her appearance and size and convoluted healing.

(I also suspect that the MCU Runaways would switch up the roster to escape the forgone conclusion of which member is the mole)

I've made my stance on Kamala being on teams clear, yeah? It's not worth losing her established supporting cast for, I don't think.

Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.

Andy Serkis was really good as Klaue. He sounded like Sharlto Copley!

He really had no reason to be in the movie, though. You could have replaced him with a random mook and nothing would have changed.

[up]Wasn't the point that Whedon needed someone to be selling vibrantium but didn't want to make someone up?

IIRC he thought about having it be a OC, looked at characters in Vibranium stories at a wiki or database, found Klaw and put him in the story. It was only later that the talks about a Black Panther movie started.

Klaw was put into the film before Whedon was made aware of a Black Panther film being made, so it's nothing but pure coincidence.

[up][up]........*in bitter tone* Coulda replaced Von Strucker with a random mook too. You know, before unceremoniously leaving him dead in a room like some chump.

Yeeeeeeeaaaaaaaah, but, I mean, realistically, there are only gonna be so many Captain America movies, and how many times do you want him fighting Nazis?

@Lore I do love that helmet. It looks sturdy and practical but still gives her the ability to emote. Does parts of it detach? Because I've seen various images where it seems to have variations to it. I've seen pictures where the top of it is absencent so her hair flows out of it, and I think other variations.

@Wack'd That's a good shout. I think Kamala's supporting cast are as important to the story as she is. Though of course, you don't have to loose that cast if she's in a teambook/story. It just depends on focus.

Let's face it, if Kamala was in a Runaways story, with her current fame she'd probably be the leading character.

American media has been having wet dreams about fighting Nazis for seventy years, why stop now?

@Wackd

Dude, he isn't just a Nazi. He's the Arch-Enemy of Nick Fury for gods sakes. And THIS is how Whedon treats him?

Nick Fury isn't getting his own movie! And even if he was, in the current continuity there's no reason for him to know who Strucker is!

Look, I get liking the character, but you've got to admit, there's very little practical use you could possibly put him to in a film series. And if, I dunno, five, ten years from now that changes—huzzah! Turns out Strucker had a brother. Or maybe they just create another character that more closely resembles the comics version. I dunno.

Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.

The fact that Fury dying would drop the number of black big-screen characters in the MCU from four to three?

The outfit, whatever. But that hair? God. Is that possible in real life? If it is she has to have it in the movie.

I love Carol's stupid cockatoo hair.
