Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

[up][up] That is made clear when he interacts with Klaw. He was well within power to just strongarm Klaw into doing his bidding and then disposing of him. From a purely pragmatic point of view, there was no point in keeping Klaw alive. Leaving him alive is just another loose end or possible threat, which is made worse when Ultron accidentally rips off Klaw's arm. At that point he had guaranteed Klaw would become his enemy, and the "logical" thing to do would be murder him to shit there and then, instead Ultron apologize and lets him live.

Making him filthy rich and actually cooperating were entirley unnecessary, but he did so anyway

He even paid him for the vibranium.

Aside from the whole 'murder humanity' thing, this Ultron is a cool guy.

He was so sad when the twins ditched him.

They were his only friends in the world.

Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.

I'd hang out with Wanda.

Seriously though, I loved her and I wasn't even expecting to! I'm excited to see what's in store for her in the next couple of MCU movies.

[up]Despite having a lot more focus and screen-time than her brother, I walked out of the theater with no sense of what Wanda's personality is.

Which is a shame, because they kind of ruined the only other prominent woman in the film.

I would hang out with every character in this movie that wasn't Hydra or Klau's organization.

I was really happy Wanda wasn't just another River Tam.

[up][up][up] Her characterization in the movie is that she cares about her twin brother because he's the only family that she has left. yeah, it's basic, but for this movie, it works, IMO.

You know, guys, speaking of Heimdall, I'd really like to see him interact with Uatu. Have they ever met in the comics?

Did anyone else roll their eyes at Natasha calling herself a monster, comparable to Bruce?

You mean Natasha? Yeah, that's been a point of contention for a while.

Personally I think it's one of the worst parts of the movie.

Natasha.

And I think the bungled intention was that it wasn't the infertility so much as everything she did as a spy that makes her a monster.

The infertility was just her telling Bruce that she's on the same genitals not working page with him.

Alone, it wouldn't have been a thing but since her major subplot is a romance, she gets monster calming duties, gets damsel distressed albeit without much distress, and brings up can't has babies as secret background shame

well it adds up.

ALSO, I'm really mad that this movie brought back the stupid bullshit about Bruce's heart rate meaning that he could transform into the Hulk from a light jog. Goddamn it.

Yeah, and I'm pretty sure the same scene with Natasha also brought back the whole "Bruce would Hulk Out if he has sex" thing and that's... ugh. Don't do that. That's so dumb.

The worst part of the movie was when the Hulk killed hundreds of people and then Black Widow said she was worse because not being able to have babies made her an inhuman monster. And they were both to dumb to remember that adoption is a thing that exists.

The second worst was Mrs. Hawkeye saying "You know I support your Avenging" and no one in the theater but me laughing at how goofy it sounds whenever they use avenging as a verb.

Can we stop saying Natasha considers herself a monster because she's sterile. That is not what she said. The context makes this clear. She was talking about all the awful stuff she did as a spy. She only brought up the sterile part to assure Bruce he wouldn't accidentally inflict any children with his condition.

I thought she was a monster because she murdered people.

Like... a lot of people...

Also because of this.
