Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

"Oh, so that's where the staff got to. Awwww, they used it to turn an AI into a real boy. That kind of thing just really gets me here, where I live. grin Welp, best go rip out his heart and beat him to death with it!"

I'm pretty sure the exact translation of "If he be worthy" is "If Odin think's you're cool." of course, that works less well in the MCU or more recent 616 where Odin is less of an abstract all powerful cosmic being.

Eh, I think "Worthy" is in the MCU more "willing and able to be a good ruler." which allows my head cannon that Black Panther would be able to pick up the MCU's hammer.

Cap certainly has the ability, but not the willingness. Vision of course would qualify as that was what he was designed for. (Depending on your interpretation)

I don't know if Thanos knows Loki is pretending to be Odin, but if a film said something to the effect that "Thanos knows about the masquerade due to his Thanos powers", it would make perfect sense to me.

It'd be funny as hell if he shows up in Ragnarok while Loki is disguised as Odin and is just like "You thought I'd forgot about your ass, didn't you?"

Cap certainly has the ability, but not the willingness.

Cap isn't good at making hard choices, though. Oh, he can sacrifice himself just fine, but sacrificing a small number of innocent to save a much larger number is just not something he's good at, as shown in AoU. He wouldn't really be a very good ruler, though he'd be better than most.

That would be funny. It's also crossed my mind that Heimidall knows, since his power revolves around being all-seeing. Now that does raise the question why he wouldn't have killed Loki the second he took over, but perhaps it's some combination of being a neutral guardian/seeing what Loki would do.

Heimdall was fired or arrested for treason or something in Dark World.

Its possible he's enjoying his retirement by getting hazardously drunk and can barely see three feet in front of himself

Is that what Thor's vision in AOU meant? (I had forgotten he was fired/thought he must have been reinstated)

Thor's vision (not Vision, although also Vision in another way) was completely accurate, then.

Damn now I want to go back to writing my collection of Hemdeil fan fics which basically showcase how his power often makes him childishly sad.

Hmm, I might write him asking Odin if he could hire Asgaurd's greatest play write to write his next play in the dark so for once Hemdeil can watch a play with his friends without already knowing all the twists.

I don't think we know what Heimdall's fate is as a result of the sloppy storytelling in the Dark World. I'd assumed he'd been reinstated but we'll have to wait, I guess.

One interpretation I've seen is that Heimdall's accusation that Thor "killed us all" may be referring to the idea that Loki is the one to cause Ragnarok, and since Thor broke him out of jail, it's technically his fault.

There's a significant detail in Thor's vision which may be worth pointing out. As Thor encounters Heimdall, Heimdall is blind. Which can be either metaphorical (the all-seeing Heimdall fails to see a oncoming threat) or literal (Heimdall has lost his omniscience or his actual eyes), but fact is the pale milky eyes ought to mean something;

I think Thanos was also visible in Thor's vision, right? Not just Tony's.

So, my going theory is that on his way to Earth, Thanos will slaughter tons of people in Asgard (either to punish Loki or just Thanos being Thanos).

[up] Good point.

All I really want to see is The Avengers visiting Asguard. Do what ever you like with the rest of the infinity war films, but I want to see the Avenger team just in Asgaurd.

[up][up]If you're fine with it not strictly being set in the MCU, EMH actually did that for it's Season 1 Finale. 'Twas verily awesome.

As far as I'm aware he's all seeing, and seems to posess normal eyesight in his interactions, as well as golden eyes, in Age of Ultron his eyes are pale milky white rather than gold and his mannerisms indicate blindness (such as the fact he feels the need to grasp Thor's face when he gets closer).

That also had an Uru Iron Man Suit.

Is he blind in the comics or something? I swear that was a part of the character and he just used his ability to psychically see things to approximate sight.

Overall I liked Age of Ultron.

But I still don't get why Ultron kidnapped Black Widow. Why didn't he just kill her?

To my knowledge Heimdall has never been blind or portrayed as such. He has always had normal looking eyes, but can somehow "see" and "hear" virtually everything and anything across the nine worlds...unless the plot calls for something him to be unable to sense it.

Because he didn't want to kill her. Ultron sees himself as the Big Good in all of this. He's attempting to jumpstart human evolution, and has a weird relationship with casualties - he seems okay with them occurring, but doesn't go out of his way to cause them.

Also, he just lost his two BFFs and was lonely, because unlike many depictions of AI, Ultron is capable of finding value in friendship.
