Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

I have to agree with everyone who complains that Natasha was handled badly in the movie. It feels like the sole reason why she was stuck in a romance with Bruce was because she happened to be the only female in the team. If you consider how much older he is and at which point the last movie left off, with Natasha being very afraid of the Hulk because he nearly killed her, it is a leap which made zero sense. It also doesn't help that I think the chemistry between her and Barton, her and Steve and even her and Falcon (the latter being my personal ship) is way stronger than the one between her and Bruce. Most of the scenes between those two are very awkward and especially the "controversial" one needed at the very least another rewrite. I don't mind what they tried, but the wording was really, really unfortunate.
In the end I think her arc pulled the movie slightly down for me. Thankfully she is still badass as an Avenger.
In a scene where the Avengers were getting drunk and having a fun time, Thor put Mjonir on the table, saying that no one can lift it.
Tony tries to lift it, and jokes that if he gets to rule Asgard, he will practice prima nocta, which refers to a noble's authority to rape his subjects on the night of their wedding.
Continuously reading, studying, and (hopefully) growing.By the way, in another topic, you know the power output of Arc Reactor?
Well, according to the official Gundam statistics, an Arc Reactor can power 2,000 Gundams (by Gundam I'm referring to the First Gundam, the most famous Gundam).
Jesus Christ, Tony, what have you done? ![]()

Alright, so I've actually seen the movie now, and it was really good.
Ultron is pretty much the best Marvel villain so far. Maybe they should just have Tony Stark make every villain in the future.
I'm going to agree with the majority that Natasha's entire arc was just garbage. Aside from the obvious stuff, she also gets damseled for no fucking reason at all. Ugh.
"It's so hard to be humble, knowing how great I am."Ultron was definitely fun...
...but I really want to see a Marvel villain that actually feels threatening. Like, the trailer version of Ultron, which I now see as a completely different character altogether.
Ultron in the movie was...to be honest? I thought he was more of a comic relief character whose purpose was to be a punching-bag.
Great job, Quicksilver.
Continuously reading, studying, and (hopefully) growing.Yeah, I personally think Natasha is pretty much the most expendable member in the Avengers. I think if her role was merged with Hawkeye, there wouldn't have been that much difference anyway.
I mean, yeah, in Winter Soldier she had a very large and meaningful role, but I just don't think she's that needed in the Avengers series.
Continuously reading, studying, and (hopefully) growing.I'd call Nat's issues with her infertility a victory for feminism. I'd say it's very important that our media can acknowledge that society is so messed up that the thing which troubles a woman who can go toe to toe with gods and robots is not being fertile.
Of course that's the type of feminism Joss tends to favour in his writing. He writes about the issues women face.
I understand the criticism of Nat's Infertility; People want Nat to be a rolemodel, so having Nat dislike being infertile spoils that to a degree.
Personally I think it's really inkeeping with the MCU iteration of the character. Highly competent in a military situation, but uncomfortable in interpersonal situations. It was nice to see in this movie her character try to progress beyond that with a relationship and sharing personal anxieties.
@Mukora. Eh, as damselsing goes, this one really isn't that problematic. For one, Nat saves her self by making a radio in a cell with a box of scraps, and no time is spent dwelling on the male characters' angst at her imprisonment. It's not like the female narrative got robbed of anything here.
Also, people asking why Nat is on the team? She's consistently the lynch pin in why the Avengers succeed in both their movies. Without Nat they would never have discovered the location of Ultron's end game. more than any of the other members; Nat is competent.
I get that, but she didn't get locked in a cage because she was too busy swooning over the hero's pecs and the villain grabbed her by the upper arm. She was consistently competent, she was captured as she was performing a critical part of the mission, and she had no reasonable way of getting out herself. She wasn't made out to be less competent or useful than her male teammates, and the situation she was in could've been applied just as easily to Hawkeye except his being useless was already a thing last movie. I understand that one might find it a shame that it had to happen to the one female team member, but I thought it wasn't disrespectful or disempowering to her, and had no issue with it.
Dopants: He meant what he said and he said what he meant, a Ninety is faithful 100%.

He was also, y'know, at a party. With drinking. So it's entirely possible he was... I dunno, tipsy?
Be kind of like assuming Hawkeye is a close-minded skeptic for (while drunk) claiming that Mjolnir's worthiness detector is all just a trick. Blown insanely out of proportion without regard for context or circumstance.
