Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

    Original post
Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Asa Butterfield is a little to recognizable for my taste. Kid's a good actor for sure, but I don't see him as Spider-Man. I'd prefer a relatively unknown actor. I'm still not super-supportive of a teenaged Peter Parker though, and would prefer him to be college-aged or slightly older.

The idea of Spider-Man as a Tagalong Kid strikes me as lame, even if he started out that way in the comics (I wouldn't know; not a big fan of his to begin with).

I have no idea why but I'm still not sold on Hulk talking in any other than scattered one-offs.

Okay, back from Age of Ultron. Can't really give a good review on it, because I'm very, very easily sold on a super-hero movie, as long as it respects its characters and doesn't want to go GRIMDAAAAAAAAAARK when the base material isn't. Still, I've been pretty disappointed with Ultron himself. I found him more intimidating in Avengers Earths Mightiest Heroes, just to give you an idea.

However, I stayed in the theater for the entirety of the credits for getting the secret scene (There actually aren't any this time. Well, damn.), but something caught my time :

"Laputa robot is the property of Studio Ghibli"

Wait, what ? Where was it ? Was it a toy in the background ? Because I completely missed that.

I don't think that's a spoiler, but is actually helpful. Just in case you haven't heard, there is NOT a post-credits scene this time, and the rumors of a Spider-Man one after the credits were false.

Yes, there's just one. The post credits thing has only happened with Phase 2 films I think.

[up]I hate that "that ANNIE remake is pretty darn fun" could possibly be a controversial opinion. The film was friggin' amazing.

Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.

Probably not that it's "controversial". I think the joke is that everyone is overreacting at everything he says. He says he's tired after finishing Age of Ultron, everyone panics and thinks he hates Marvel. He says Coulson is "dead" as far as Age of Ultron is concerned, everyone panics and thinks he hates Marvel. He says he'd like to do a Batman film, etc. He says he likes the new Annie, etc.

Seems odd he'd aim his tweets at the Marvel execs when most of the uproar comes from less bright members of the general public. Unless that's part of the joke/he doesn't want to directly insult the public because that certainly won't go over well.

He might be hearing from them too. It's no secret that the Age of Ultron press tour has a certain amount of pressure to it after a few incidents occurred last week.

People have been distorting and blowing out of proportion stuff he's been saying so the studio might be worried about that. I saw a surprising amount of people who were upset by the out of context "I consider Coulson dead" remark because they felt someone as influential as him saying that might lead to people dropping the show.

I guess. If anything the public's overreaction to it is validating the studios' fears. Having seen this firsthand he should probably put more thought into what he says. Snark is hard to convey via text.

I honestly don't get the discussion concerning JW remarks. He said that Coulson is death in the Movieverse months ago because he thinks that it would be too confusing for the audience which don't watch Ao S when he suddenly turns up again. That is nothing new. He made some remarks Batman being a property he would like to do his own take on and everyone freaks out that he wants to "jump ship", even though he said again and again that he wants to stay involved in the MCU, just not as full-blown director. He sets people straight who believe that The Avengers resulted in a lot of money for him, and everyone acts as if he dissed Marvel studios.

Not sure if this is a complaint or just an observation, but does anyone think Cap had more faith in Wanda than in Tony? While they were responsible for Ultron, you would think Cap would trust them bit more since they had a better understanding of what they were dealing with. And instead it felt like he needed to stop them simply because Tony had a hand in it and that meant it would bite them in the end.

What really got me was that the Avengers who sided with Vision's creation, unless I'm wrong about Barton, weren't part of the new team.

I thing that impressed me about Age Of Ultron is that in thirty years time someone could hear about the MCU and they wouldn't in the slightest have to look up a viewing order. They could watch Avengers and then Age of Ultron and not notice a thing.

That's also true of Captain America: The First Avenger and Winter Soldier, but not true of Iron Man 2 and Iron Man 3.

It was more of a case of:

Cap and Twins: Don't do it you idiots!
Bruce and Tony: We're not being idiots, we're doing it!
Clint: Oh, these assholes again.
Thor: I agree with Stark.
Everybody: What.
Vision: Hello, I am Vision, your personal mind stone companion.

Hmm, so tomorrow Avengers 2 will be on American theatre. Considering it already made 200 million, I can't imagine what the total figure would be. I'm betting it will gross billion dollars at the very least. Now, whether if it would outgross Furious 7 or not (it grossed 1.3 billion as of this post), I can't be 100% sure.

From what I've heard so far, Ultron is not quarter as impressive as he was shown in the trailer. Oh well, Loki was a pathetic villain and it didn't stop him from being amusing as hell anyway.

[up]I loved the take on Ultron. My only complain is that I wanted to see more of him.

He does sound like a very entertaining villain, if nothing else. I would have liked to see the version as shown on the trailer, but hey, can't make a real judgement until watching the film proper. I do know that I will enjoy him, though.

When I first watched the trailer, upon seeing Hulkbuster I thought it was one of the suits that was hacked by Ultron and Hulk was trying to stop it. Funny how things turn out.

[up]Well, I expected him to bore me after Skynet, Hal and all the other dangerous A.I.s. But the opposite was the case. He was an interesting mixture between Pinocchio and Frankenstein's monster. In fact, there were also some elements which reminded me of Zombie-movies.

I never said he would be boring. Just not what I expected. Not a fan of zombie-genre, btw.

Again, just me.
