Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

    Original post
Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

... That is literally a child. There's no way that guy's older than twelve.

[up][up]People are often older than they look. Take me for example; I'm 24 years old, and yet I still look like a freaking 18 year old. If I actually went to bars, I'd get carded in a heartbeat.tongue Basically, just because he looks like he's 12 doesn't mean he is.

Ah, Ender from the Ender's Game movie. Nice to see him staying around.

And yes, he looks younger than he is. Ender's Game had him playing a ten year old and he was already in his teens.

If it's true, I thought he did a solid performance in Ender's Game. A little disappointed they didn't take advantage of the opportunity for diversity, but I understand the value for being true to the comics, and that pic they used immediately reminds me of Spider-Man (1967) Peter Parker. There's a million wildly conflicting rumors so I'll just wait until the official announcement.

Nope. You're all wrong. He's twelve. Anything that says he isn't is lying.

[up]Technically, since a page (such as the page that describes he's 18,) can't actually say anything, seeing as it has no vocal cords and all, it's really just describing that he's 18. And seeing as anything saying he's 18 is a lie, I suppose anything describing he's 18 must be the truth.tongue

That kid looks like a dweeb. He even likes anime. Now I'm imagining Peter as a 4chan dude or a TV Troper.

He needs brown eyes though. I always imagine Peter with brown eyes.

We're not exactly dealing with the most trustworthy of sources but I'd be happy with him in the role. He still looks pretty young but I guess that works if they want a kinda young Peter who might stick around for a lot of movies.

Honestly, I think Dawson's casting has ruined us. They look so young because we normally see early 20s in those roles. I think having an actual teen in such a role would be a great change.

The official choice still hasn't been made - and you'll very likely know when it is

Er, we don't really know when Marvel and Sony are gonna announce who's gonna be Spidey officially, do we?

The article seemed to imply they'll do it on some big event like SDCC or whatever, but we know for a fact that Marvel's kept saying that they're not showing up at this year's SDCC...

[up][up] I'll trust them a little more.tongue

I think a young actor is a great choice. Besides the fact that they want Parker to be 15 when he starts out in the MCU, like Swanpride pointed out, he'll be able to stick around a while because he looks younger smile

The MCU plays out vaguely in real time. So for once we might actually get to see a Peter Parker mature.

That is the only film I have ever turned off from boredom. I knew about the history of early cinema, nothing was going over my head...

But even when things happened, it felt like nothing happened.

[up][up][up][up]Not at all. We are currently in real time. It's not always that easy to figure out because they have started to hide actual dates (which was especially annoying with Daredevil), but there is some sort of working timeline to it.

[up][up][up]So, the actor did one film that you didn't like and, therefore, he sucks and shouldn't do anything ever? The problem could have been multiple things. The director, the script, you(it was a popular movie, after all). Give the boy another chance.

Reading the Cinema Blend article and it basically amounts to "LR said it so will we". I'm not going to believe it until there's a second independent source.

Given how Rocket Raccoon and Howard the Duck were handled in GOTG, think they can do Banner as Hulk in his "Professor (Banner talking normally when he's the Hulk)" phase justice in the films?

Technologically it's doable, but they'd have to do up the voice to make it work. Hearing Mark Ruffalo's normal voice come out of the Hulk would be weird
