Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Whedon speaks kind of candidly about SHIELD
.
“It’s a weird little yes and no. As far as I’m concerned in the films, yes he’s dead. In terms of the narrative of these guys [The Avengers] his loss was very important. When I created the television show, it was sort of on the understanding that this can work and we can do it with integrity, but these Avengers movies are for people to see the Avengers movies and nothing else. And it would neither make sense nor be useful to say ‘Oh and by the way remember me? I died!’”
And it sounds like the somewhat confusing decision has caused some consternation within the MCU.
“I think actually the movie people were a little bit cross about the TV show” Whedon revealed. “They were sort of like ‘Well you can have this but not this. And this but not that.’ It’s complicated enough as it is without me adding another layer of complication. We also created a TV show called S.H.I.E.L.D. right before they made a movie where they destroyed S.H.I.E.L.D.. So everybody’s having a GREAT time!”

Based on the Sony leaks it's not going to be anything more than a minor cameo, which is just fine by me.

I do note that Agents of Shield has seemingly minimal tying into Age of Ultron, although the US is only getting the movie this Friday so the last episode was the one before the one before the movie. There is referencing of Von Strucker, so maybe this week's ties in more. And the Winter Soldier tie-in was only noticeable after the movie. I'm kind of disappointed AOS's characters didn't make a cameo, I've spent far more time with them then the running time of the movies after all. At least Peggy got a cameo, I guess. I also hoped for Daredevil cameo/reference but that was unlikely, maybe I missed an easter egg.
I didn't actually catch that Tony was quitting the Avengers at the end of the movie, I thought he was just taking a break or what not. I mean I thought he was quitting being Iron Man at the end of 3 when he blew up all those suits and that didn't happen so clearly I need to listen more closely to dialogue. I hope Jane's okay with Thor going back to Asgard all the time.
So why exactly did Bruce/The Hulk decide to leave Black Widow and the group? I'm aware he, um, destroyed a huge amount of infrastructure in Wakanda, but he was mind-controlled and he otherwise was a huge help during the movie. It doesn't seem like he'd become enough of a problem that he'd decide to go AWOL.
DumboIt's also interesting that you bring up that he was brainwashed because I wonder just how viable a defense that would be in the MCU. One of the things I kinda hate about the Marvel and DCU in the comics is that people tend to be completely unwilling to believe "I was brainwashed!" or "I was kidnapped and replaced by a shapeshifter!" as excuses, despite them happening ALL THE TIME.

.. Depends.. I mean, they also allow for the possibility of checking such claims. Depending on the legal system you are under.
RE: Wanda: Her entire character is massively different from the comics. Powerset, origin, motivations.. Basically an original character with a name lift. Looks a lot like the comic character though. Her "glass cannon" status is debatable, however, since she does manifest very durable forcefields, and if we are being gruesome about it.. the marton effect is not a thing. If she wants to kill you, you die. Armor, super-durability? Not a defense. Not really that bloodthirsty a character, tough.
Evans says the plan is for
Infinity War to shoot back to back for nine months next year.
Concerning Ao S I kept wondering if the Helicarrier is the one Olmost Shield had...I also wonder about the "This is what Shield is supposed to be" line...plus, I also suspect that the Avengers got the information where they can find Strucker and the Sceptre from Coulson's branch in the first place

Well, both Wanda and Pietro kept the "became terrorists after being misled by bad guy" aspects of their origins. If you think about it, their origins is actually a clever adaptation to work around the whole "mutant" and "Magneto" limitations. Maybe next movie we learn they are actually Strucker's children and the parallels become more obvious.
But, yeah, she is very different than the comic version. Pietro at last kept both his powers and his basic personality.

Yeah. I think the next two episodes will clarify the supposed discrepancies.

I'll be honest, I'm not fond of the idea of Civil War being about accountability. Superheroes fighting for their right to be superheroes without any consequences if they fuck up or do something amoral is...er...unappealing.
Black Widow's "you're not going to arrest any of us because without us you're fucked" speech was the worst part of Winter Soldier.
Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.![]()
Considering the vocal backlash against Man of Steel and the Fridge Logic entries on the first Avengers film, it seems like audiences would probably be bothered if there wasn't at least some acknowledgement of the subject in-universe.

He might be involved in this just because as we saw in AOU, other countries aren't necessarily trusting or positive towards the team.
I'm actually interested to see just how global the scale of it is.
