Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

He might be involved in this just because as we saw in AOU, other countries aren't necessarily trusting or positive towards the team.

I'm actually interested to see just how global the scale of it is.

Whedon speaks kind of candidly about SHIELD.

“Yeah he’s dead. The entire television series is just a fever dream. It’s a Jacob’s Ladder moment he’s having at the point of death, but we don’t give that away until after season seven. And there’s a snow globe. Now I’ve given it away. Bollocks!

“It’s a weird little yes and no. As far as I’m concerned in the films, yes he’s dead. In terms of the narrative of these guys [The Avengers] his loss was very important. When I created the television show, it was sort of on the understanding that this can work and we can do it with integrity, but these Avengers movies are for people to see the Avengers movies and nothing else. And it would neither make sense nor be useful to say ‘Oh and by the way remember me? I died!’”

And it sounds like the somewhat confusing decision has caused some consternation within the MCU.

“I think actually the movie people were a little bit cross about the TV show” Whedon revealed. “They were sort of like ‘Well you can have this but not this. And this but not that.’ It’s complicated enough as it is without me adding another layer of complication. We also created a TV show called S.H.I.E.L.D. right before they made a movie where they destroyed S.H.I.E.L.D.. So everybody’s having a GREAT time!”

WSJ sort of confirms that Spider-Man will be in Civil War.

Based on the Sony leaks it's not going to be anything more than a minor cameo, which is just fine by me.

I do note that Agents of Shield has seemingly minimal tying into Age of Ultron, although the US is only getting the movie this Friday so the last episode was the one before the one before the movie. There is referencing of Von Strucker, so maybe this week's ties in more. And the Winter Soldier tie-in was only noticeable after the movie. I'm kind of disappointed AOS's characters didn't make a cameo, I've spent far more time with them then the running time of the movies after all. At least Peggy got a cameo, I guess. I also hoped for Daredevil cameo/reference but that was unlikely, maybe I missed an easter egg.

I didn't actually catch that Tony was quitting the Avengers at the end of the movie, I thought he was just taking a break or what not. I mean I thought he was quitting being Iron Man at the end of 3 when he blew up all those suits and that didn't happen so clearly I need to listen more closely to dialogue. I hope Jane's okay with Thor going back to Asgard all the time.

So why exactly did Bruce/The Hulk decide to leave Black Widow and the group? I'm aware he, um, destroyed a huge amount of infrastructure in Wakanda, but he was mind-controlled and he otherwise was a huge help during the movie. It doesn't seem like he'd become enough of a problem that he'd decide to go AWOL.

[up] In answer to your last question Natasha had totally betrayed Banner's trust, there's no way any part of him is going to want to listen to her.

It's also interesting that you bring up that he was brainwashed because I wonder just how viable a defense that would be in the MCU. One of the things I kinda hate about the Marvel and DCU in the comics is that people tend to be completely unwilling to believe "I was brainwashed!" or "I was kidnapped and replaced by a shapeshifter!" as excuses, despite them happening ALL THE TIME.

Trials like these are why we need She-Hulk. But maybe Matt Murdock will do for now.

Ah, I guess I completely didn't get it was because of her pushing him off to get the Hulk in action....makes sense.

.. Depends.. I mean, they also allow for the possibility of checking such claims. Depending on the legal system you are under.

RE: Wanda: Her entire character is massively different from the comics. Powerset, origin, motivations.. Basically an original character with a name lift. Looks a lot like the comic character though. Her "glass cannon" status is debatable, however, since she does manifest very durable forcefields, and if we are being gruesome about it.. the marton effect is not a thing. If she wants to kill you, you die. Armor, super-durability? Not a defense. Not really that bloodthirsty a character, tough.

Concerning Ao S I kept wondering if the Helicarrier is the one Olmost Shield had...I also wonder about the "This is what Shield is supposed to be" line...plus, I also suspect that the Avengers got the information where they can find Strucker and the Sceptre from Coulson's branch in the first place

I wonder if that means the Infinity War films themselves are going to be continuous like the Hobbit trilogy or if there's going to be a timeskip built into the plot. I'm thinking the former, based on the schedule shuffling caused by Spider-Man.

[up][up][up][up][up]Well, both Wanda and Pietro kept the "became terrorists after being misled by bad guy" aspects of their origins. If you think about it, their origins is actually a clever adaptation to work around the whole "mutant" and "Magneto" limitations. Maybe next movie we learn they are actually Strucker's children and the parallels become more obvious.

But, yeah, she is very different than the comic version. Pietro at last kept both his powers and his basic personality.

[up][up]Yeah. I think the next two episodes will clarify the supposed discrepancies.

[up][up]Feige said that it's going to be two complete films that are connected rather than one long 4 hour movie...which is odd given the Part I and Part II numbering.

Though Godfather Part II was also a pretty complete movie.

I guess the numbering is mostly there to clarify that they expect the audience to watch the first movie in order to understand the second one. They can still have a concluded story for each one. Worked with the Harry Potter movies too, after all.

I'll be honest, I'm not fond of the idea of Civil War being about accountability. Superheroes fighting for their right to be superheroes without any consequences if they fuck up or do something amoral is...er...unappealing.

Black Widow's "you're not going to arrest any of us because without us you're fucked" speech was the worst part of Winter Soldier.

Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.

Privacy or Security. You can't have both. I don't see how wanting privacy is by definition amoral.

Considering the vocal backlash against Man of Steel and the Fridge Logic entries on the first Avengers film, it seems like audiences would probably be bothered if there wasn't at least some acknowledgement of the subject in-universe.

The question is who they should be accountable to. They are at the end of the day a world-wide operating rescue group. Which government should have a say over them? And how should the accountability look like?
