Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Spader nailed the part and I liked him, but I think the humor is gonna be a Base Breaker for some. A lot of critics used him as a prime example of when the Buffy Speak goes too far, and I have to agree. He's menacing and charismatic a lot of the time but there are a few instances where the goofiness makes it hard to take him seriously.

I kind of got a Hades from Hercules vibe from Ultron especially when he sheepishly apologises for ripping someone's arm off in a hate-fueled rage.

Yeah the trailers made him seem like a 'Humanity must die' type robot who decides to kill of or enslave humans because he considers them inferior and resents being created to serve them. But in reality he spends the whole movie trying to do what he sees as necessary for humanity to survive.

One thing I liked but also felt was an example of poor writing was his attachment to the Maximoffs and his fear of being alone. I really liked that and felt it elevated him but at the same time I have no idea where it came from.

One of the gripes I kind of have with the Avengers is that so much of the time they spent together was off screen. It looks like they've spent a year together looking for the scepter but it's not shown so I'm still not getting that real sense of camaraderie.

Joss Whedon did say that Ultron was that kind of guy that would sit you down, talk about his grievances, and could make you agree with them.

Then he'd kill you.

Our obligatory "grain of salt" alert of the day, but it's rumored Benedict Cumberbatch may cameo in the Iron Fist series as Stephen Strange.

Which is not QUITE as out there as some reports, since Iron Fist will involve magic and Cumberbatch still does TV in addition to his film work.

Wasn't there a thing a while ago about Cumberbatch being cast as Doctor Strange?

No, that was confirmed forever ago. It's the Iron Fist appearance that is news.

Why Daredevil Just Doesn't Work.

Honestly, I don't know what to think about this. Maybe he has a few good points in there, but, eh; I still like DD. (Although his bit about the Kingpin was freaking moronic; he hadn't even seen Episode 8. Don't be dissin' the Kingpin 'till you've seen Ep 8, that's all I've gotta' say 'bout that.tongue)

[up][up]I find it funny that he calls the show a "dumb superhero show" but still expects the crime rings and stuff to be portrayed with incredible realism.

I'm more insulted by the idea that just because the Kingpin is powerful and has lots of money he should automatically be having sex with women year round. The man is clearly a fairly private individual, and isn't used to more intimate displays of affection.

Ultimate Kingpin was/is married, definitely not a ladies man.

As for the Russian brothers, I get the impression that they're the heads of their operation, and that while they're tough, they're also relatively small-time. I don't know if that's "realistic", but when you have a blind dude with super-enhanced senses (who can kinda, sort of see) who puts on a costume and fights crime, in a world with superheroes, aliens, and God knows what else...well, that puts me pretty firmly in the "fuck slavish devotion to 'realism'" camp.

[up][up] 616 Kingpin was married too. Vanessa's complicated relationship with him is adapted straight from either comic (though comics Vanessa ultimately wants him to get out of crime), so the idea that it shouldn't exist seems to be more inexperience with the actual character than anything.

Maybe it's the nature of the site he posts on, but his writing style already makes it hard to take him seriously at all. The fact that even we casual fans are able to type our criticisms in a more professional manner just makes him sound like a huge contrarian.

@Ultron as a character. I think he perfectly comes across as both a human and a robot who is terrible at being both, and kind of wants to be both and neither. It's just a lot more overt in the comics.

Which reminds me - does his voice sound robotic, or does it sound more human like in that one clip? Or does it evolve?

It starts of incredibly robotic and monotone and creepy, then it progressively gets more human, as does his personality; to the point it's the uncanny vally on the other end of being too human to be comfortable.

And how far into the movie is the clip that I mentioned?

Interesting. Knowing that it's a conscious choice on the part of the director makes me like it a whole lot more.

I couldn't hear the robot filter almost at all after the party scene when he gets his new body that isn't a cobbled together mess.

I'm not sure which clip you mean. But the majority of the film Ultron does sound more human than robot.
