Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

No, not quite. It has the exact same problem (the movie basically becomes a massive Sequel Hook for three future MCU films) but it's more coherent than that.

And as rushed as some development is, there's nothing quite as bad as Harry meeting Peter for the first time in years and then becoming his arch nemesis like 8 seconds later.

[up]Actually, I don't think Harry was ever mad at Peter until he realized he was Spider-Man.

@Purple Dalek Oh, I actually like those elements, too. Which make the fact that Fox overpowered their version so much even more frustrating. The character was not exactly Quicksilver, but he was fun. But he can never have a big role on the X-men movies because with his powers, there is no need for anyone else.

[up] Funnily enough, Fox!Quicksilver is going to have a bigger role in X-Men: Apocalypse.

I don't know why, but despite loving Days of Future Past to pieces I just can't feel excited about Apocalypse. Maybe it's just because DOFP was very character-driven and Apocalypse, from that stinger, just kinda seems like it's "Stop da bad guy!"

That's probably not right, but the stinger just didn't do it for me. It doesn't really get me intrigued the way that the stinger for The Wolverine did. I guess I'll be able to make more of a judgment when we get more details on it.

Also, looking at some of the negative reviews for Age of Ultron. One complaint that seems to be cropping up is that the character development from the previous films (such as The Winter Soldier and Iron Man 3, neither of which I saw) seems to be... ignored.

The character reset buttons are a valid complaint (I saw a midnight screening last night, heck yeah), it very much feels like a direct continuation of the first Avengers despite Cap and Tony both having some significant development in the in-between times. It did feel a little bit more rote than the first, sticking to the stuff that worked the first time and turning it up a notch, but if you liked the first, you'll like the second. If you didn't, avoid.

I feel like that might be a fault of Whedon himself. He already was kinda playing fast and loose with Cap's characterization to begin with, so it doesn't surprise me that he'd be flippant enough to ignore everything that happened in The Winter Soldier. He's already let me down with Widow by shoehorning an unnecessary romantic storyline as her subplot despite all his hullabaloo about feminism and the groundwork The Winter Soldier set up for more interesting directions too. But I guess it's one of the perils of having so many different directors and writers going about. Let's hope the Russos and Marcus/Mcfeely treat their colleagues' work with more respect.

Hearing about the film from a couple of friends who live overseas who've seen the film, supposedly, the Banner/Widow stuff is kind of nice, apparently.

[up]Even if it's not poorly written, I doubt the Widow/Hulk romance is going to be pertinent to the main plot, so it's basically going to be another loose plot thread in a movie cram-packed with them.

[up]You really should stop worrying about the movie so much based on some reviews, and wait until you've actually seen it. You just might like it.

[up]I doubt I'll dislike it, but at this point, from what I've heard about it, if the movie manages to come together completely without any major problems, it's going to be quite a feat.

The Widow/Hulk thing is actually pretty important to the finale.

The Black Widow/Hulk romance is(aside from one of the major pace breakers of the movie whenever it shows up)pretty much this(paraphrasing alot): (Intro)Widow: Hey Hulk calm down and push our hands together. (Party)Banner: Is she hitting on me? Banner: She's hitting on me? Steve: She's hitting on you. Widow: I'm hitting on you. (Ship)Widow: Argh, flashbacks to my training! Banner: I'm coming to help! Hulk: Oops mind controlled. (Farm)Widow: We should run away together when this is over since we're both pretty much monsters. Banner: I can't control myself and I don't want any kids that might end up a monster like me. Widow: Oh, I'm sterile so you don't need to worry about that. (Asia)Clint: Widow got captured. Banner: We must save her! (Final Battle)Banner: I'm here to save you and then we run off together after we get to the quinjet! Widow: Sorry but we need Hulk for this. Hulk: Awww. (Ending)Widow: Hey, don't turn on the stealth mode because we won't be able to track you and we need to talk. Hulk: Hangs up and turns on stealth mode. Widow: I'm going to be sad until I see him again. Samuel L Jackson: We found the jet but he's gone so hope for a postcard when he feels better, oh and I might have sent you to recruit Banner because I thought you two fit well together.

They should really have started this romance earlier.

I'm not against the idea of Widow pairing up with someone, nor am I necessarily against the theoretical pairing of her with Bruce were it done differently. And as for Clintasha I was OK with it because while it's enough to count as legitimate Ship Tease, there was still enough room for plausible deniability to avoid feeling like a Token Romance either (and sure enough that wiggle room worked out after all). It's just really annoying when a lot of females in the MCU, as likeable and interesting as they can be, have their romantic interactions with the male heroes as a major identifier. Not that I would be against Widow getting in a relationship down the line, but I'd rather it be with someone whom she's had a significant amount of prior platonic interaction, like Cap at least (not that I would think it's a good idea for them to get together either).

Bruce/Tony is a lot of fun, but it's never been a ship I personally took seriously. Not to say they couldn't down the line in some theoretical alternate universe, but I didn't see anything there that went beyond a fairly ordinary friendship.

Meanwhile, Betty Ross sits around waiting for her no-longer-a-fugitive Love Interest to call her, or something.

And Jane Foster thinks she's got it bad...

On Jane: The excuse for her not being in the movie is that she's busy working and is going to get a Nobel prize.

On Pepper: She's busy running the company and doesn't have time for parties.

On Betty: Hulk is back to being pretty much a criminal at the end with world leaders debating hunting him down for everyone he killed in Africa.

I didn't spoil myself either on Winter Soldier (and the story was way better for it to the point when The Reveal happened I actually thought "What. WHAT?!") but I already saw a clip that told me Scarlet Witch was controlling Hulk but that's not that big of a story development.
