Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

We'll be getting a ton of deleted scenes
on the AOU DVD because a LOT of shit got cut this time, apparently.
The more I hear about this movie, the less reassured I am.
Well, some of my favourite reviewers have already seen it. People in whose taste I trust and who have a lot of knowledge about writing and/or movies. And they all say that it is a good movie. Either at least as good as "The Avengers" just without the fun of seeing those characters together for the first time, or even better than "The Avengers". I'll know for sure in two days, but I am not worried at all. I think I'll have a blast, as long as my expectations are not unrealistic high.
I'm curious but how many of the film's problems do you consider to be caused by the accumulated weight of the MCU and execs shoehorning things, and how much of it do you think is due to Whedon's own inadequacies? I apologize if this question's worded a little meanspiritedly, but no director is perfect and as people have mentioned before in this thread Whedon has some recurring issues like writing all his characters too samey.
Saw a midnight screening. Needless to say, it's great fun. The character work is as sharp as ever but there's too much going on and many plot points feel undercooked. Anyway, if I may make a list:
- There's a genuine sense of camaraderie between the Avengers this time round, especially near the beginning. They're still a disparate group in some ways, but they definitely feel more like friends this time.
- Scarlet Witch's powers are very ill defined. I'm still not sure what her powers were. Telekinesis and causing hallucinations, I think?
- At the end of the film, Ultron and the Vision have a conversation about the pros and cons of humanity. It reminded me of old school sci-fi.
- Hawkeye actually gets stuff to do this time. Amusingly, at my screening they were handing out Avengers themed drink cups. Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, the Hulk, Black Widow and even Ultron all had their own cups, but poor Hawkeye didn't get one.
- There's a wonderful scene near the end of the film where Cap muses on the Fridge Logic of Thor's hammer.
- Andy Serkis is only in one scene but he really makes the most of it.
- Aaron Johnson was serviceable but they don't really do anything visually inventive with Quicksilver's powers. Honestly, the X-Men: Days of Future Past version of the character is much more memorable.
Is the Vision an actual character and not some kind of Deus ex Machina?
I've only seen one real clip of him and already I'm annoyed by his attitude. "Oh look at me, I'm fast, you didn't see that coming even though your reflexes can hardly keep up with me and thus you can't?" I'm personally hoping he tries to do that with Steve and gets knocked flat on his ass.

I'm surprised Cocky Speedster isn't a trope yet, because that seems to be a reoccuring theme with that Super power.
edit you know what, I'm off to the YKTTW page.

The stuff with the Infinity Gems and the synthetic body yeah, but I just wasn't too enthused with the way he was finally introduced RIGHT before the finale so he can have his big conversation with Ultron and then finish him. I did like the birth scene however.

For me, it's not just the one scene that makes me prefer Evan Peters' Quicksilver. The kitchen scene in Days of Future Past is fantastic but I also dig his kleptomania and his wonderfully terrible Seventies fashion and hair.
I don't know. I've seen Aaron Johnson in quite a few things now and he's always stuck me as a decent enough actor, but not a very charismatic or memorable screen presence.
So basically, Age of Ultron makes Amazing Spider-Man 2 look simplistic and straightforward?

I've got fanfics for Frozen, Spectacular Spider-Man, Crash Bandicoot, and Spyro the Dragon.

Oh and Evans and Renner caused quite a PR scandal.
