Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

How does that stop them from being aliens? Look at the stuff Inhumans can do.

Lordoflore: Main cons are a forgettable soundtrack apart from the main theme

I feel like that's something that could be applied to most MCU films actually. None of the OS Ts really stuck with me aside from Iron Man 1 and The Winter Soldier's, and GOTG's doesn't count because most of the good music was licensed.

Really? I dig especially the Captain America themes, but Thor has some memorable music pieces, too.

The only one that ever had memorable scoring to me was the first Iron Man. Though I do like that AOU at least tried to integrate some of the music from the other movies.

The theme from Thor 2 is even the new theme of Marvel Studios.

Welp, five minutes into the movie the 3D(which feels really bad. This was a "apply 3D after the movie is filmed", right?) shit itself and rendered the movie unwatchable.

Funny, at my showing the sound was cut off for the first five minutes, so they had to start it all over again.

DAMN YOU, HYDRA ULTRON!

And that's why I don't often watch 3D. One time I did watch The Avengers in 3D and it looked so blurry and dim that I basically stopped using the glasses by the third act and it looked better.

Loki turns Thor into a very tiny journalist.

So if I'm counting correctly, we only have two Stones left to reveal?

Yep. Soul which has always been connected to Adam Warlock and Magus and Time(which was the GemStone that Gamora had in Infinity Watch but pretty much never used).

[up] So, where do you expect them to pop up?

Personally, my money's on them ignoring Magnus and Warlock, and just putting the Soul Stone in Doctor Strange (perhaps even merging it with the Eye of Agamotto, like how the Tesseract was both a Stone and the Cosmic Cube).

[up]My guess is we will find the final two in Guardians 2 and Doctor Strange.

I've had it in my head since the beginning that Strange will obtain Soul in his movie and Thanos will just find Time off screen right before Avengers 3.

We know Warlock is showing up in Gotg2(hell, he's already out of his cocoon by the end of 1)so I find it hard to believe they are going to take the Stone and have someone else show up with it when they have a character with tons of history with it and Thanos(Thanos two arch rivals are Captain Mar-Vell(until his death) and Adam Warlock/Magus) running around(hell, he actually lives in it whenever Marvel decides they don't want him to end a conflict by showing up).

Hell, we've seen the Eye Of Agamotto in Asgard as a cameo and it's pretty much the same color as the Time Stone.

The cocoon is in the background and never commented on. Do we know for sure Warlock will show up?

Gunn has talked about it: "There are the slither creature from my movie Slither behind The Collector, those guys are pretty obvious. You have Adam Warlock's cocoon, you have all sorts of other characters from Marvel movies".

The fact it showed up in Thor 2 and Guardians 1(+being broken open in the stinger) should at least tell us that Marvel has some plans for Adam.

[up][up][up] Oh, yeah. I completely forgot about those!

Well, in that case, I guess Strange will get the Time Stone and Warlock will get the Soul Stone (albeit possibly changing hands so that Gamora gets her hands on it at some point, to make up for her not getting the Time Stone).

Infinity Watch(taking place after Infinity Gauntlet) was weird about who got what Gem/Stone aside from Adam keeping Soul. Gamora got the Time Gem because she didn't want it and would never use it aside from by accident, Drax got Power which he just swallowed, Moondragon got the Mind Gem because she already had mind powers so what could more of them do, Space Gem went to Pip the Troll who didn't know how to use it and Thanos of all people got Reality. I wouldn't count on Gamora ever touching Time unless they are going for a mythology gag.

You know what else showed up in Odin's Vault? The infinity gauntlet complete with all the stones.

Actually that was a different Gauntlet since IIRC it's for the opposite hand that Thanos wears his. It's probably just a gag/cameo since they apparently didn't have the idea for Thanos or the Stones showing up until they started with Avengers 1.

Actually James Gunn has been kinda waffly on whether the cocoon in Guardians of the Galaxy is Adam Warlock's or not. http://www.comicbookmovie.com/fansites/MarvelFreshman/news/?a=111045

He's outright said that he's read the Dn A run of Gotg before doing the movie so I find it hard to believe he would miss one of the main characters of the book who is also the Big Bad or some villains finding a cocoon they think has Warlock inside it because Warlock is the only one with cocoons only for Thanos to pop out of it in the second to last issue.

Btw, most of the comments on that article are great because no one trusts Gunn and thinks he's covering for revealing stuff that Marvel doesn't want him to talk about yet.

Like the arguments with some of the discrepancies around the Tesseract/Cube, my guess is that when they were including the Gauntlet cameo in the first Thor, they had no idea it was going to be a major thing in later movies.

I think someone brought up a while back that the Gauntlet itself has no special powers, so there's no real need for Thanos to steal some random shiny glove in a vault.
