Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

    Original post
Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Eh? Bullseye and Echo could work but they'd have to seriously tone down or remove Elektra's psychic stuff. The show seems more comfortable implying supernatural stuff than it does outright depicting it.

Also, yeah, we definitely need Stilt-Man.

Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.

Pardon my asking, but what's the big deal about Stilt-Man?

The Chaste and The Hand could turn up. That seems to be a popular theory.

To be honest I have no idea if stilt man is a running gag along the lines of Aquaman, or an actual bad-ass villain who just happens to have an idiotic name.

Stilt man is a silver age character who keeps pops up every now and then.

His shtick is he built extending legs and commits crime. That's it. In universe he is considered a joke.

I don't get what you mean by aquaman being a running gag though.

There's even a Lady Stilt-Man.

Why? Was "Stilt Lady" taken? There are far more intuitive names than 'Lady Stilt-Man".

I never got how our threads became obsessed with Stilt Man

@Wack'd, I didn't even know Elektra was supposed to have psychic powers. Everything where I've encountered her in has just had her be a very scary competent assassin.

Hm.

I wonder if a representative of HYDRA will pay a visit to Fisk in prison...

Speaking of Fisk in prison, did anyone notice Fisk's uniform was white? Possibly/Obviously a nod to his classic attire? (And yes, I know they already did a reference to the Kingpin's white attire when Vanessa talked about the other guys who had the hots for her.)

[up][up]I didn't either, honestly. I'm not a Daredevil guy. I looked this stuff up so I could contribute to the conversation.

Lady stiltman was using stiltman's gear.

She just now goes by Stiltman.

[up]Aren't her psychic powers just ninja stuff? Like being able to feel people by meditating?

To be fair, I believe there was a story line where Stilt-man gets murdered by an unknown super hero and the supervillian population of NYC banded together in outrage.

That's a story I dearly want to read, but I've only heard about it in passing.

Hm. On reflection, I think I still stand by what I said about Thor. I think we do see a clear progression of him from being a cocky, arrogant jerk, to being humbled, to him finally becoming more heroic and selfless. I don't think he just turned on a dime. I think we can see a progression of his character arc in the movie.

Basically, I'd like to see the King Pin start incorporating super villains into his criminal empire. I'd like to see a lot more lawyer stuff. I'd like to see Bullseye.

Other than that I have faith they could take the series in any direction and I'd eat it up.

I want the white suit, cane, and violet scarf.

But yeah, I also want more lawyer stuff too. I love superheroes to death, but I like seeing them in their normal careers too.

The lawyer stuff was far more entertaining than seeing Murdock torture bad guys, I'll give you that.

I still say they could get a lot out of a She-Hulk Law and Order-type series.

That's another reason why I liked the first half of the show better than the second half. There was more lawyer stuff.

She-Hulk and Daredevil actually had a short crossover before She-Hulk was cancelled and ended after the first 12 issues.

They talked a lot as friends about their work and current cases. Of course they end up on opposite sides in the next trial(which is about Captain America's past before he got the Super Serum)for the first time ever.

Giving the lawyer stuff more prominence in the second season and giving more the episodes a "superhero Perry Mason-style mystery" vibe would be a really cool idea. The only down side is that it would be a bit harder to do arc stuff with it, unless all of their clients turned out to be manipulated by the same forces or he took one client over several episodes.
