Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Btw, WB Games has a large sale on Platstation Store right now. If you wanted to pick up LEGO Marvel before the new LEGO Avengers game comes out(or the DC games, Lord of the rings etc)now would be the time to do it.

Ignition point of Civil War.

Oh and someone wanted an example of what Carol could bring to the team in terms of personality so I found a(slightly old) issue of her playing with Wolverine. Will probably post more examples when I'm done with the "Origin And Some History" post for her.

A bunch of different rumors. If IW 1 and 2 has different villains 2 is probably going to have Adam Magus.

For those who don't know, Guardians 3000 is the current comic about the first Guardians(and a new member) dealing with "our" world(and other stuff) screwing up time so that everything is different in their time. It's written by one of the persons behind the comic that Gotg 1 pulled stuff from, Dan Abnett. For Secret Wars they are in a new version of the classic Korvac Saga.

Thanos not being the sole villain isn't surprising. In fact I was never sure why so many people seemed to think that would be the case.

4 and a half hours of the Avengers all punching one guy would be kind of boring and tedious after a while. Particularly if there is a greatly expanded group of heroes like people are predicting.

Well they wouldn't be punching the same guy, there'd be build up. They'd have to face armies, interrogate middlemen, deal with quirky minibosses, Tracking Thanos down, getting through the deadly traps, having to deal with character conflicts and relationships along the way.

I mean they wouldn't get to the proper punching of Thanos until at least the second half of the second movie. They might, at most, have a shot at him in the first and get swatted away. Then all of the above happen.

Clearly what's going to happen at the end of IW 1 is Thanos escaping in the Thanoscopter.

Looks like he's defending the Helicarrier, the original one from the first Avengers film.

There is a 99% chance it will crash or have something bad happen to it because that is one of the rules of the Marvel universes.

I wonder where it was even kept hidden after its damage. We saw the three new ones at the Triskellion but I guess I'd assumed they had just disassembled or scrapped the first one.

I figured it was somewhere else on some other mission. It's a mobile command post, so by nature the least necessary place for it to be is near SHIELD HQ.

If the military can make an Airborne Aircraft Carrier, why is everyone still at "Real Life"-levels with their tech? Wouldn't those breakthroughs have seeped to the civilian market by now?

Same reason SHIELD is zooming around in flying cars in the 616-verse but not everybody is living like the Jetsons.

Technological Utopias are boring settings for superhero comics? Gotcha.

If the military can have hovering aircraft carriers, why don't civilians have...what, exactly? How the hell does a hovercraft translate to the public market? On what individual level is this a useful technological advancement?

I imagine a flying car 1. is as expensive as all hell to build and 2. would require a pilot's license, hence a lack of availability.

If there's anything that should be on the consumer market it's those holographic touchscreen projectors everyone seems to have.

Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.

I like the Venture Brothers joke where the father reveals that he built a functioning lightsaber, but the whole thing was so wildly expensive to manufacture and power that there was simply no way it could ever be sold to a civilian market.

I hope IW part 2 ends with Thanos being led away by the NYPD.

I'm not saying everyone have hover cars. But there should be some evidence that these advancements have had some impact. Like, yea, holoscreens and the like.

S.H.I.E.L.D doesn't want humanity to become too strong so that they can't be controlled/used?

One of the things that mark Inverted!616!Tony Stark as evil is the fact that he gives everyone free Extremis to make everyone perfect BUT has it require money for as long as you want it to be active with it being really expensive.

There was a line in Avengers about Tony trying to find a way to use Arc Reactor tech to make renewable clean energy, but I don't think we ever heard anything more about that.

Nope, unless the next Avengers film tackles that issue.

Dude can make a full suit of power armor and miniaturize a revolutionary power source in a cave with a box of scraps, and yet can't figure out how to get his marketing department off their ass and do their jobs.

I wonder what exactly it is Stark Industries actually makes. We get some nebulous answers about how they sell "tech" but what that actually means isn't elaborated on I don't think.

Arc Reactor cell phones would be cool.

Arc reactor cars are more likely.

IIRC 616!Tony built a whole city(I think he named it after something greek)just because he could and had the money and it would be a good place to test some civilian tech.
