Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

I'm guessing because it's so far off. Jessica and Luke will be appearing later this year, while Iron Fist won't drop until, what, late next year?

It's been confirmed he'll be in Jessica's show and that his own launches in 2016.

Scarlet Witch will be appearing in Civil War and it sounds like she's getting a new costume at the end of AOU.

No mention of Quicksilver? He's so dead. I'm guessing his death is what makes Wanda switch sides to the heroes.

Guardians 2 will be about fathers, because all the mothers in the franchise are dead.

Fingers crossed that means we get to see Moondragon.

Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.

Speaking of mother figures, aside from Steven Universe I can't think off the top of my head of any recent series not already aimed specifically at women where a character's relationship with their mother was a major focus, and not in the creepy Oedipal sense.

That's because it's lame for tough dudes to look up to their moms or have any real connection with them beyond death angst.

Dum Dum Dugan was the Howling Commando who looked like Chester A. Arthur, right?

While it doesn't really qualify I thought Joseph Joestar and Lisa Lisa made a great duo and nobody can question how tough they are.

Wait, Gotg1 was about Quill's relationship with his mother? That was like three scenes in the whole movie.

Guardians with family:

  • Quill: Father(comic version has a sister also from another mother)
  • Groot: Might see his planet?
  • Gamora: Nebula and Thanos.
  • Rocket: We will probably never see his comic planet.
  • Drax: Moondragon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! His wife is deader than dead.
  • Adam Warlock: Gamora was his lover for a time but he has no family(his foster father is pretty much the High Evolutionary) unless you count Magus as an evil twin(which he isn't).
  • Phyla-Vell: Father is Mar-Vell who is the best soldier/man the Kree has ever had, has a brother who remade the universe once(which created her) and a mother who made her and her brother from hers and Mar-Vell's DNA after he died. Also pretty much living with Moondragon.
  • Bug: Not happening.
  • Cosmo: No family.
  • Mantis: You don't want me to talk about it.
  • Jack Flag: Can't remember.
  • Angela: Sister of Thor and Loki and daughter of Odin.

The major theme of Quill's personal character arc is his relationship with his mother. The major theme of the character is that while he has this happy go lucky personality, he sort of lives in the shadow of his mother's death, as he starts the movie weeping for her, then spends the entire movie desperately clinging to everything even vaguely connected to her (such as risking his life for the mix tape), and literally brings the downfall of the villain when he comes to terms with his mother's death.

And the movie's very final scene being him finally moving on from his mother's death and becoming a better person for it.

Last spoilerly thing I am posting until the movie is out. But the mid-credits scene directly sets up Infinity War.

Steven Universe may not be aimed at women, but it's definitely aimed at girls a lot more than it is boys. So really, there are basically no modern stories that fit that description.

I'm guessing that he'll appear to die in AOU only to show up again in Inhumans.

Interesting...if they had Phyla-Vell and Mar-Vell as characters, maybe they could use it to partially set up Captain Marvel?

Yeah Downey Jr seems very similar to his character at times. Ultimately a decent person with incredible talent, but also a self-centered attention whore.
