Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

man i can't wait until the punisher or lois lane gets recast and folks are like "but the character was always white!"

those folks will be wrong for intensely stupid reasons

Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.

[up] Well, yes, but maybe not for the reasons you think.

Yes, that was a thing that happened.

[up] Well, you should provide links!

...Wait, the Punisher did that too?

To be honest....who cares? The only thing I would want is finally a version of Lois Lane which doesn't annoy me.

I think it would be funny if they cast a black/hispanic teenager and keep calling him Peter Parker.

Just to rub salt into the wounds, they can have him use the word miles in his first line and have him standing next to a place named Morales.

I really see no reason to believe that this is anything but movie-executive speak for "he'll probably be white but there's no way I'm saying that we're specifically looking for a white actor because that'll make me look like a racist."

He's probably choosing his words very carefully because in the last year or so, people finally started getting a little less subtle in interview questions about the whole diversity issue. So the whole thing seems like a very diplomatic answer, right down to the "But Miles is a totally awesome character too and I'm sure he could eventually show up down the line!" thing.

Very fashionable.

Makes you wonder why an AI would go for a cape.

Considering how realistically human the face is, I'm actually wondering what Vision even is.

[up][up][up][up]For the same reason an AI would go for a red and green human form in the first place. The last thing anyone accused Vision's appearance to be was "practical".

Anybody hoping Luke Cage will show up in Iron Fist's show in an episode that pays homage to their frequent team-ups?

[up] Actually, I'm hoping that Iron Fist shows up in Luke Cage's show too, as a form of Early-Bird Cameo. And then after Defenders finishes, that they do a Heroes for Hire show that keeps both Luke and Danny on full-time.

I'm wondering why they're keeping so mum on Iron Fist's casting when all the other leading characters have been announced long ago.
