Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Hey, so I was reading the AOU tropes page—any chance someone can explain this to me?

Ultron's final form has an extra layer of metal atop his body, and the pattern of the new head armor more closely resembles his appearance from the comic (sans the large glowing eyes and mouth).
Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Ultron's head like 95% eyes and mouth by volume? How the hell can he resemble his comics appearance without either of those things?

Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.

I think it's the actual pattern and the fact that it has those pointy things over the mouth.

I don't know why but Ultron sounds different in that scene.

I dislike that Ultron's voice lacks a robot-y reverb.

My various fanfics.

I think it's the lack of modulation or whatever it was that made him sound robotic in the trailers.

Also, this clip, more than anything, makes me wish this movie was out now. Right now.

Ultron can fucking throw down, holy shit.

[up][up][up] That's because that's James Spader's actual voice without the gravelly echo-y thing going on in the other trailers.

I'm more irritated that his voice sounds kinda like Bill Corbett with a cold, and so when he says "clearly you've never made an omelet" I was like "were they releasing a Riff Trax version of the scene?".

Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.

[up][up]That still hasn't been added? The movie comes out in two weeks.

Added? No, nothing needs to be added.

If that scene is any indication they still need to add whatever effect they use to make Ultron sound robotic.

He might sound different at different parts of the movie.

"I'm glad you asked that because I wanted to take this time to explain to you the details of my evil plan" (LASER BLAST)

Thats outstanding.

So we finally heard Scarlet Witch talk.

I find it kind of weird he actually referred to it as an Evil Plan while Wanda and Pietro are there. I thought they were working with Ultron because they thought he was on their side.

That was his robot sarcasm.

Clearly the best kind of sarcasm.

And yeah, the voice always seems oddly inconsistent in these clips. Hopefully they'll keep it clean for the final film.

I thought Ultron sounded like them because he upgrades his voice throughout the movie.

@Hawkeye and Mockingbird being married

Yes, in the 616 comics. His wife in the Ultimates was some nobody, and in the MCU another character on AOS has taken his place as Mockingbird's ex-husband.

Okay, while I find Whedon's one-linery type of humor to be hit or miss sometimes (Banner's weird line in the other clip about creating a robot rage-monster or something, for instance), Ultron's personality literally had me laughing out loud.

Not only his dialogue, but the way he moves and his body language. He's not all stiff and taciturn like most robot characters (including himself in other adaptations). It's all very human.

I was worried he wouldn't have one, and now it seems he'll have quite a bit of one. He definitely feels like the son of Tony Stark.

I'd like to see Tony and Ultron at father-child baseball game along with Thanos, Nebula and Gamora.

@Hawkeye and Mockingbird,

They were married in the main comic line. But they divorced recently, after it turned out Bobbi was alive.
