Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

So what you're saying is that we might have another Mandarin situation on our hands?

I... guess? It's really consistent with most of their movies - with Iron Man 1, you saw Tony blow up tanks and you might've figured Stane was evil, but you never saw Iron Monger. Winter Soldier trailers showed you the eponymous character and everything he's capable of, but you never saw HYDRA. Guardians showed us Ronan and gave us the gist of what he wanted, but never outright showed us much more than that.
Here, we get Yellowjacket, we get to see who's behind the suit, we're given the gist of what he wants (and can infer why), we actually see him execute villainy and get what he wants, we get to see him suiting up and going after the heroes, and what looks like the big climactic battle between Ant-Man and Yellowjacket.
If all of this is in the trailer, there's something else we're not being told. It's possible that in the end the fight against Yellowjacket might be Act 1, with Yellowjacket himself being a Disc-One Final Boss.
Plus, Marvel's done the type of villain Yellowjacket seems to be three times already.

Remember that the first footage we got about the movie was a Ant-Man knocking two guards out while wearing the suit that Pym has in the LEGO set. People thought this was Scott before getting his own costume. It wouldn't surprise me if the original script had to be changed after all the troubles and the movie is actually like we see it in the trailers.

I was personally thinking they plan on having the Wasp make an appearance, and want to keep it a surprise.
Oh God! Natural light! He needs something to keep up with the Thanoscopter.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Feige had this to say on how Ant-Man relates to the larger MCU
.
Also, Hank Pym’s attitude towards Avengers, towards S.H.I.E.L.D, and kind of the cinematic universe in general, is much more informed after the events of Age of Ultron, and in a certain way, before the events of Civil War.
He makes it sound like Ant-Man is totally an afterthought despite his assertion to the contrary.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.I feel largely the same way as Lordoflore about Got G and Quill though I don't hate him so much as feel indifferent about him. Some of the Antman jokes rubbed me the wrong way but the Thomas bit at the end was pretty good.
The thing about Ant-Man is, he's Marvel's Aquaman. The wife-punch is his Superfriends. It was a thing that happened one time that it's not fair to judge him by, but will never stop being the butt of jokes because, ultimately, people aren't really making fun of him because of that, it's just the easy joke to make; they're making fun of him because he's Ant-Man. The wife punch is just the punchline; the setup is the fact that he's Ant-Man.
He's Honey I Shrunk The Kids trying to be taken seriously on the same level as Thor, Captain America, and Spider-Man. He's too ridiculous to be taken seriously yet not ridiculous enough to be hilariously awesome, like a raccoon with a minigun. Ultimately, like Aquaman, he's got his niche fanbase that will defend to the death that no, really, this guy is totally awesome if you give him a chance, but most people won't give him that chance because, seriously, he's Ant-Man.
Which as an aside, is also the answer to the age old question, "Spider-Man and Reed Richards hit their wives too, and they got to live it down; why can't Ant-Man?" Ant-Man doesn't get to live it down because Spider-Man and Reed Richards aren't Ant-Man.

Given the effect Civil War is touted to have in the MCU, Captain Marvel is likely going to be seriously affected by that. Plus, Capt. Marvel's role in The 'Verse is pretty wide, so it's unlikely to be a straight-up self contained story like Ant-Man is apparently going to be.

To reiterate what EW already said from their viewing of the movie, no Spider-Man appearance in Age of Ultron, says Feige
.
I honestly think that Ant-man lends itself better to the movies than to the comics. Being small looks so much cooler in motion. Plus, if you make him a scientist, he is nothing special, because a lot of heroes are also scientist. But a thief? yeah, that's rarer and fits his special abilities way better.

Hope punching Scott Lang in the face.
