Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Liked it better than the earlier trailers, but still seems really tonally inconsistent.
Nice touch in explaining why Scott needs to learn to fight.
One thing I'm wondering about which will presumably be better explained in the movie itself- Hank's concern over the misuse of the Ant Man suit seems kind of weird. Like it would make sense if this was the Earths Mightiest Heroes Hank, who was a pacifist (and thus would not be cool with his tech being used for combat), but here it seems like Hank has this fear of With Great Power Comes Great Insanity- which strikes me as kind of overblown for such a silly power.
I mean I could see an issue with someone untrustworthy being given the suit/particles and then going rogue, but that's not exactly a dire threat to the safety of the world.

It's not too much of a stretch to think this Hank would have a problem with some corporate asshole mass producing his tech, equipping it with death lasers, and recklessly selling it to anyone who can cough up the dough (PM Cs, terrorist cells, HYDRA, etc.)

Well yeah, but by the looks of things that's the start of the/one of the final battle/s of the movie so you would think they would've made fun of the name earlier. I don't know, it just reminds me way too much of Quill's personality which I grew to hate(doesn't help that I kind of really hate "look at me I'm funny" heroes after the overflow of them in the MCU).

That's a really good point. I was thinking of it in the Iron Man framework and the emphasis on it being a bad thing for the U.S. government to have the technology. It is definitely a concern that if for sale on the (black) market, it could wind up in the hands of some dangerous people (just imagine a terrorist shrinking a bomb so it could fit inside of a battery powered toothbrush).
That being said, if I recall correctly, the prequel comic did present this idea of the Pym particles not being good for one's sanity (right?) and I'm not sure what I think about treating the technology like the Super Soldier Serum (i.e. that things will go horribly wrong unless it's entrusted to someone pure of heart).
Hank does seem a lot like Quill, but since I liked Quill, I'm not too concerned by that.

I'm not convinced this movie is going to sell particularly well. It'll probably be a perfectly serviceable movie, but not necessarily make the record-shattering numbers people expect from the MCU, mainly because it's Ant-Man.
I feel like the movie entered production because they wanted to make origin movies for each founding Avenger way back in Phase I, and finished production because it'd been in production for so long that there was no sense throwing it out. I don't get the feel that anyone, at any point on the project, went, "You know what's a great idea for a movie? Ant-Man. There is a story audiences can get behind!"
From the trailers, they've done a fantastic job with the project, but I still think it's going to wind up being the Incredible Hulk of Phase III: a pretty decent film Overshadowed by Awesome, leading to critics calling it "The moment the superhero bubble burst" and proclaiming doom for the superhero genre, until Captain America: Civil War promptly shuts everyone up.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Something that kind of surprised me: Marvel is hoping for a 200+ million opening day for Ao U but IIRC Avengers 1 had a 300+ million opening day. Are they opening later in more countries this time around? I know F&F7 broke almost all the opening day numbers Marvel had apart from the original Avengers just a few days ago but I don't think they opened all around the world at the same time.
Ant-man is not the only new superhero scheduled, even if he might be the last one who gets a complete origin story. I honestly don't see the concern. Unless the first reviews are really bad, I think enough people will watch it. It doesn't have to pull Age of Ultron numbers, it just have to be a good investment. And as far as I remember, none of the Marvel movies were a financial bomb so far, not even The Incredible Hulk. True, Ant-man hasn't the same pull on its own, but as part of the MCU it will be interesting enough for enough people.

And they need to show off their best visual trick more often. That unequivocally works. It looks very dynamic.

Visit my Tumblr! I may say things. The Bureau ProjectThat was a good trailer. I'm looking forward to it, if only for the actors. It has a great cast, but I don't expect there to be an Ant-Man 2 at any point. Still looks like a good balance of humor and serious themes.
I'm confidant in it being at least a mild success. Certainly not a massive dent in the genre like Batman and Robin or something.
"A king has no friends. Only subjects and enemies."

Loved the cameo at the end. T. is really terrifying from this perspective.
