Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

RE: Ward as Taskmaster rumor: Yeeeeaaaah, I don't exactly see that as possible. What I do see possible is Tasky curb stomping Ward to show just how tough he is in his first appearance. Also 'cause it'd be great seeing Ward get his backstabbing ass whooped.
Something else that was on my head for some time. Anybody think Nova would work better as a Netflix show rather than a full-fledged movie? Especially if they're gonna go for Sam!Nova?
Yeah, I'm still waiting for season 2 to be on Netflix already. I kinda don't have ABC, so I don't really know anything beyond Mockingbird's in it and Skye's real name is Daisy Johnson, who's known in the Marvel Comics universe as Quake, an agent of SHIELD who can do earthquakes, and evidently Skye/Daisy is an Inhuman who can do earthquakes.
I was kinda like "Okay." on the whole Skye being Daisy thing. Actually? I'm kinda glad her real name is Daisy. I've kinda had this vibe that "Skye" by itself and without a surname just felt..."meh". You know? Just "Eh."
I've been really hoping that she straight-up rejects the name "Daisy Johnson", seeing as the only reason she has to use it is because her murderous jackhole of a dad wants her to. Thus far, that seems to be the route they're taking.

Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies. There is a scene with a generic lab tech (who is a white guy) who isn't named and has no dialogue. For some reason, the novelization (which I'm guessing was written based off an earlier draft) referred to him as Amadeus Cho, but the novels aren't canon.

Are any of the novelizations any good? I've heard the Iron Man 2 one has some interesting tidbits which might be Word of Saint Paul, but at the same time there's also the infamous Metal Gear Solid novels.

I hope he doesn't mean that in the way I think he means... Also I've still got the nagging feeling that Whedon is keen on turning Wanda into River 2.0.
So when do you guys think that this superhero film bubble is going to burst, if ever?
One of the major complaints that I've heard about the sheer amount of new superhero films coming out is that most of them just go through the motions, not really bothering to try to innovate or break away from the formula, because they know that audiences will come to see them anyways, and that eventually, this will collapse in on itself.
Eh, look at the last few Marvel movies and we do have quite a lot of variety. The other companies and some of the previous Marvel movies, perhaps not so much, but I think people are still willing to watch them. I'm not claiming prophecy but this can definitely last a while longer.

The only point I see superhero movies starting to wane is after Infinity War, since Marvel is leading the pack with superheroes and that's where their plans reach their zenith. Even though they've got plans for way after that, that's where they'll be seriously needing to change the guard for their actors and lineups, where they're going to have to start a new running plot for their ensemble works, and present a new direction in which their movies will lead. So it's likely going to be the point where momentum will finally break, whether the fallout is rather noticeable or is only slight and ultimately doesn't amount to much.
That said, I doubt after this superhero movies will even be wiped out of Hollywood the way they were after Batman And Robin - superheroes have successfully spread into genres outside of comics in a way they hadn't really before: there were the big, but solitary examples like Superman's movies or the Batman series, but now we've got studios whose entire point is making superhero productions and who show no sign of failing due to it. They've basically become a steady subgenre at this point. I joke a lot about DC screwing up so bad they kill off superhero movies again, but that's not going to happen any time soon.

Interestingly, I don't think of anything in the MCU as a proper "superhero movie." When I think superhero movie, the first thing that comes to mind is Sam Raimi's Spider-Man movies on one extreme and Batman Forever on the other. Fun action flicks with some fairly thoughtful themes or just a fun, campy action flick that you can suspend your disbelief enough to just enjoy the ride.
Marvel's done so much Genre-Busting that no film really feels like a superhero movie so much as they do just a variety of different movies (though if there is one thing to criticize it's that everything connects almost too well. Music is substantially lacking. Outside of Guardians pop culture soundtrack and the Winter Soldier's leitmotif, I remember nothing interesting).
I even think the Dark Knight trilogy is more of a "superhero" film series than the MCU, because it still has those overarching themes of self-importance that the Raimi Spider-Man movies do and everything feels contained to this one hero. The MCU is more liberal in dividing its focus among different heroes and because of it, no one hero feels more super than the other so those things that make a superhero movie are lost. Maybe it's just me or maybe the term "superhero movie" has just been redefined in the past few years.
"A king has no friends. Only subjects and enemies."I assume video game movies will be the next big thing (since so many of them want to be movies anyway), but Superhero movies have some juice left.
Visit my Tumblr! I may say things. The Bureau ProjectIt is interesting to see how they have changed over the years. This video points out the differences in the Spider Man films for example (and also has some critiques on current ones as well:

Hmm, had an idea. Have Taskmaster as an association of Batrock. Batrock is a mercenary and has a sort of respect for Cap. The two could show up working together.
One other thing I'd love to see- Ghost on AOS. Basically he'd start out working for HYDRA against Stark, Inc./SHIELD but would ultimately sabotage HYDRA, since he hates both. My idea is that he initially claims to be a former Rising Tide associate of Skye's that she never noticed, but would afterward say that he was making that up.
