Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Loki is a prior villain, too. I really prefer it when the villains stick around, unless there is a good reason to kill them. Though Raza could have stayed dead, if they just had kept up with the ten rings theme. I suspect one of the reasons they didn't was because they didn't want a potential political agenda in the movie. It least not this particular one.

[up][up]I will be very, very, very surprised if all nine Avengers get equal screen time and sensible, well-developed roles in the plot. There's got to be at least one who seems kind of out of place or pointless or boring, and if it's not Hawkeye, it'll be Black Widow or Bruce Banner or Quicksilver. Someone. Mark my words.

Thing is, Hawkeye is the one speaking the entire main lines of the party scene: the "whosoever... worthy... it's a trick!", it's just they barely show him as he speaks, so it seems like something Tony would say.

[up][up]Well, he already stole Ant-Man's role in creating Ultron, so it's a little late for that...

I've got fanfics for Frozen, Spectacular Spider-Man, Crash Bandicoot, and Spyro the Dragon.

Well, I'm sure Pym doesn't mind not being responsible for a disney-quoting murder bot.

The movie does have an extra half hour or so of runtime, and hopefully a much smaller burden of exposition compared to the first film, so hopefully that frees some space up for development.

[up]x6 I hope it's not Quicksilver. I liked him a lot in Do FP.

[up]I will be very happy if the MCU Quicksilver acts exactly the same as the Do FP one.

I've got fanfics for Frozen, Spectacular Spider-Man, Crash Bandicoot, and Spyro the Dragon.

MCU Quicksilver feels more directly cocky in comparison to the X-Men Quicksilver, whose got a more laid back arrogance.

[up][up] I like DOFP Quicksilver, but I want MCU Quicksilver to be his own thing. So far he seems to be a little more true to the comics than the DOFP one, all of which is totally fine.

[up]Am I missing something? I thought the only thing we've seen of QS is the poat credit scene in Cap 2.

DOFP Quicksilver was about the only good thing about that movie. That being said, I would want MCU Pietro to be his own person.

I enjoyed it for the most part, although Wolverine hogging all the screen time still irks me. I'm glad the next movie will probably give screen time to some characters that have been languishing in the background.

[up][up][up]What was so bad about that film? I enjoyed it quite a lot, although I still prefer The Winter Soldier, despite my friends telling me the former was the better film.

It was a bit too cheesy, the acting and special effects were meh at best, and I just didn't find it all that interesting.

[up] I suppose that's fair, although I don't agree.

[up][up][up] Eh, he really didn't have that much, especially compared to Charles/Erik/Raven.

Isn't he going to be in Age of Apocalypse, too? I mean, focus will probably be on the First Class cast, as well as their new recruits. I guess we'll see.
