Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Cool. I like Scarlet Witch but her comic powers are really badly defined.
Other cool things we might have already known; Hulk has super scientifically advanced stretchy trousers, Hawkeye has trick arrows now and Black Widow's sticks do have the same power as her sting attack thing.

I typically like Cracked - even though their writers' research isn't always the best and bias or humor sometimes screws up how they interpret facts, they generally get enough points right that I'm interesting in looking things up and their collective style humor style is still pretty damn funny.
But whenever they do anything about comic books and related topics, they always seem to strike out. Maybe it's because comics are an easy subject to get opinionated about.
But still, nothing they do now could be worse than that "Comic Book Movies That Need To Be Stopped" article they published a long while back.

I really don't like the sticks and the glowing costume. It looks like Natasha is working on an airfield in her free time.
And while I agree that Pepper's death scene was pretty pointless, none of the others were. I really don't get the obsession over "someone has to die to feel the stakes". Death is still only one possible consequences. And I really can't say that I would expect any less that people will turn up alive again even if they kill someone off for good. But that has nothing to do with them having done it before and everything with storytelling conventions. I even expected that Raza survived the explosion in Iron Man somehow, so that he could turn up in the sequel to take revenge. While I don't expect Yinsen to turn up again. You can always tell by the way the story is told.
I really hope Raza doesn't turn up again down the road.
I'd like to think that if he did survive, he's seen Iron Man on the news and went, "Wow. I picked a hell of the wrong fight. Not doing that again." There aren't enough villains who go, "You know what, maybe I should cut my losses here and just try not to have to fight Spider-Man/the Hulk/Thor again."

At this point, no. But for the sequel, he would have been a better villain than Vanko. Think about it, the guy already had a grudge against Tony, and he certainly would love to stage a terrorist attack on his expo. If I had written the sequel, I would have staged a story in which Hammer (a smarter one) is competing with Tony by building those drones, claiming that they are better than manned suits, and either Raz or the ten rings uses the opportunity to manipulate the drones. And since they really wanted some action in-between, the attack at the Grand Prix could have been about setting up a flare and diverting Tony's attention from the expo.
Would have certainly worked better than the claim that no one in the whole world safe for some Russian criminal is able to work out how Tony's technology works. I mean, really? I can imagine that nobody would be able to build something as good as Tony's work, but someone competent in the world should come close once the idea is known.
Eh. I think putting as much distance between the plot and the Ten Rings as possible was a good idea. They're legitimately threatening to an unarmored Tony Stark, but Stane demonstrated rather well how hopelessly outclassed they are at Iron Man's level, and any effort made to bring back this ragtag group of terrorists that needs to scrape at the heels of rich, white businessmen for the technology to be threatening would be really hard to sell, especially if they wind up just trading Stane for Hammer.
That's probably why they weren't really a presence in Iron Man 3 either, despite their name being invoked. By the time Iron Man 2 comes along, Tony Stark will never be in any legitimate danger from a bunch of ratty thugs in caves again, especially when you consider the only reason they were ever able to get where they did in the first place was because they were using his weapons.
They worked for the origin story, but then the cute Shout-Out that was their name just became a set of shackles around the wrists of the Mandarin, binding a much better villain to an incredibly weak premise.

Even in the articles where I generally agree with their point (such as the one about the need for more female and minority leads) they get rather smug and condescending. It's like I wanna agree with you, but you're going out of your way to belittle me and make me feel like a stupid dick.
Also Hilarious in Hindsight was their article about how Ant-Man and the Falcon would never make it to film.

You know what I think is weird? Hugo Weaving said he didn't really care about playing Red Skull, right?
And yet, the general consensus seems to be that he did a great take on him.
What's up with that?
Don't get me wrong, I'm glad he did the Red Skull great. But nobody else thinks/thought his "I didn't care" attitude about the role is/was odd?

He wanted to try being in a superhero movie to see if they would interest him(since he's in the stage of his life where he wants to try new things or be picky about what he is going to do). The first one didn't hit him and he would rather do other movies but if Marvel wants him back he will be back since he has a contract for more movies.
Against a guy with an army of superpowered robot suits at his disposal, though?
Yeah, that's the one.
Killian got away with "terrorist attacks" on American soil because he had the Vice President in his pocket, and even he couldn't accomplish more than defacing Stark's house. Raza wouldn't have that advantage, and without Stark weapons, political tools, super-advanced technology, or anything beyond a bunch of crazy assholes with conventional arms, he'd be lucky to get within ten thousand feet of Tony Stark before S.H.I.E.L.D. or conventional military picked him up.
Not every terrorist act is 9/11. I think you're sorely underestimating how many of these guys never even make it as far as a news report.
