Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Probably because after Secret Wars (some) of the multiverse is getting brought back.
Forever liveblogging the AvengersHonnestly, I think the 1999999 Universe actually has a possibility of out living the 616 in the long term. Once they stop making movies in the MCU, they'll undoubtedly continue the stories in comics. And as a new reader, the choice between the universe you grew up with in film, and a different universe which is 56 years older is easy.
I still think they're heading for some kind of Crisis On Infinite Earths story where they create a brand new universe that takes the best elements from 616, Ultimate, and MCU and mixes them together.
Going back to the romantic relationship discussion, I agree that Agent Carter introduced a semi-romantic angle in Howard's friendship with Steve.
I also agree about Peggie/Angie being kind of one sided. There's definitely Les Yay there and it wouldn't really surprise me to learn that Angie had a more than friendly interest in Peggy. However, while obviously friendly, Peggy is a lot less invested in the relationship.
I can see hints of Sam having a crush on Nat- it really only comes up in the first scene where the picks Steve up for the mission though. Winter Soldier seemed to joss the idea of Nat and Steve being in a romantic relationship, with Steve preferring to have a friend. However, I could see them as being Friends with Benefits.
It means discontinuing sixty years of story telling though. It means that suddenly history of the multi-verse as depicted in every comic between 1962 and 2015 can not be confirmed as having happened.
The problem with reboots is that it makes continuity more complicated, not less. It doesn't strike me as MARVEL's style, who historically have successfully just launched brand new independent universes when they wish to make a continuity light universe, or, equally successfully, dial back the importance of the on going status quo.
I feel the main reason DC keep having universe reboots is due to a desire to undo previous reboots.
It's also the case that the 616 universe is really rather successful at the moment as the market is going; there doesn't seem to me to be the motivation to reboot it.

Exactly. It seems odd that Marvel would just throw away one of the things that gave them a big advantage over DC. The infinite numbered Earths mean way more flexibility to muck around with alternate realities, small isolated spinoffs, and other kinds of experiments. Plus it gives them an easier way to jettison Dork Ages compared to DC, which I agree is stifled by its set number of worlds and keeps causing its own problems because of its obsession with continuity.

He might, depending on what Bucky was like (though I think Fanon exaggerates the idea to which Bucky Really Gets Around), but I get the impression Steve's a little conservative when it comes to sex in relationships.

Speaking of the Russos and Infinity War, wasn't it already confirmed they were going to direct long ago? Or was it still confined to Word of Saint Paul from the leaks? Either way, I do hope they get Markus and Mc Feely back on-board since I always thought Captain America had the most solid writing out of the MCU, even if the direction wasn't always up to snuff.

And his Asgardian lungs are so mighty, some times he drowns outthe combined efforts of the other three.
Tony gets jealous that Happy spends more of his free time with Steve rather than himself, and builds four robots which can BSQ better. One of them is just DUM-E with a vintage limited edition record player taped to him.

Given that the contracts for Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth and Bob Jr might not be renewed beyond Infinity War, who would we have make up the roster for Avengers 4? It seems to me if we get around to a Masters of Evil plot, the villains may have out lived a lot of the heroes they've fought.
There'll be no lack of characters at this point,, so it almost becomes competitive.
Bruce Banner and Hulk would probably be the most bankable member, The Ruff's contract extends really quite far into the future at this point and he is really well liked. Wanda, Peitro and Vision seem like an obvious inclusion, because it's not obvious where there story would be told outside of the Avenger films. If Scarlet Johanson and Jeremy Renner are still about I'd expect them to stick around, but that's not a sure bet. We're already at six characters, I think anything more than nine would be unreasonable, so I'll chuck in War Machine and Falcon because their actors are brilliant and it allows a continuation of the Ironman and Captain America story threads. I think it's too early to tell if it will even make sense for Black Panther to be on the Avengers team so I'd probably give the last spot to Captain Marvel (Who might be able to continue the Thor plot lines)
In terms of Doctor Strange, I imagine him to be more involved in the Cosmic side of the MCU than the Avengers, just like I'd expect Black Panther to be more the international side. I really can't say I have much idea what the long term plan for the ANT-MAN cast is, but I expect they'll replace Black widow and Hawkeye's spots as needed.
I think we need to keep in mind that for the purposes of the Avengers movies, we can have part-time Avengers. Thor for example wasn't really on the payroll during Avengers 1, he just showed up on his own initiative because Loki was on Earth and returned to Asgarde at the end of the movie. So while Black Panther probably won't be hanging out in New York on his typical Tuesday afternoon, any time there is a major threat to the world as a whole he'll link up with the rest of the Avengers.
The only exception is any characters that are both offworld and don't have a practical means find out about what's going down. Hence why the Guardians of the Galaxy aren't going to be in Avengers 2.
In that case, Black Panther only has a reason to be in an Avenger Movie if the threat is at least global. A plot like a Masters of Evil threat might not justify it.
Post Infinity war I'd expect Avengers 4 to be more intimate in scale.
Really I'm wondering if they could do a second team up franchises and have the MCU version of the Illuminate. Black Panther and Doctor Strange would fit in far better on that team.
If he was, Fury didn't tell Tony, as when Tony's looking at the information on the people they're grouping together there's nothing on Thor. It's also the case that they had no way on contacting Thor, and he just kind of, turned up.
Also, Fury implied that the Avenger initiative was a response to Thor. "We are hopelessly, hilariously out gunned.' So the idea was that if they couldn't stop a cosmic force, they could at least put together a small team to threaten it personally. Literally, 'Avengers'.

I think Black Panther is almost certainly gonna be on the Avengers. Strange is the only one I might not see being with the group since until recently he didn't have any real connection to them. But that could change since the movies do draw from some of the more recent books. And then he at least varies up the powersets of the group a little more as well.
Avengerswise the only ones I could see not being included of the new franchises would probably be the cast of the Inhumans, since that's already likely to be a team/ensemble movie.

I'm glad the Russos are being given this responsibility. They really showed that they were capable of juggling quite a few characters while fitting in plenty of characterization and development for everyone. Major props to the screenwriters too for all the good lines and writing the plot so tightly. Although I'm hearing Whedon might also be in the running for writing duty? I'm not sure who I'd rather have in the writers' seat since either choice has their strengths and weaknesses.

Yeah, the destruction of the multiverse claim doesn't make the slightest bit of sense. (not to mention lots of books are still shedualled to continue beyond Secret Wars). I can only believe it's a bluff and in reality this is just a way to save the liked elements of the Ultimate universe from vanishing once it's no longer in print. (It's also an opportunity to move lots of loved characters from outside the 616 into the 616, like Spider-Gwen, Mayday and Japanese Spider-Man.)
