Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

I dunno about that. Agent Carter also introduced Angie. But it definitely made me feel more strongly about the Steve and Peggy moments that did happen.

That's true. The show made me start shipping Peggy with Angie, too, but it also made me feel worse about Steggy ultimately not happening.

Am I the only one who sees Angie/Peggy as mostly one-sided? Then again some people swear up and down by Jarvis/Peggy and I just can't understand that one at all. Maybe I'm still too hung up on Steve/Peggy.

Nah, man. Howard/Steve.

All the messed-up crap Howard knows he's responsible for and his deepest, most mind-clouding fantasy is getting Steve back? That's devotion.

Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.

The first time Peggy and Howard had their exchange about Steve in The Blitzkrieg Button, I was thinking to myself that maybe Howard meant it in a fatherly way. But after that chat in the last episode I'm completely certain the writers intended to say Howard was literally in love with Steve. Poor Tony, no wonder he's so screwed up.

Yeah, Howard had a thing for Steve something awful. Holy crap. [up][up][up]Also, I agree with you on Jarvis/Peggy. I don't see it at all. Their relationship seems completely platonic to me.

Steggy? So Steve and Peggy are a dinosaur? Well, they are old, but...

So that's why Steve teamed up with Devil Dinosaur...

[up][up]I'm thinking more because his dad had an obsessive crush on someone who he kept comparing Tony to.

[up]...I'd say if your father is comparing their son to someone he was madly in love with that's not an indication of the son being messed up.

Obsessive and self-destructive Survivor's Guilt runs deep in that family. At this rate, Tony's hypothetical son is going to pledge to find a way to kill death itself once his idol dies when there's nothing he can do.

I have no idea where they got the notion a romance with Widow is happening or that it's the focal point of the film. They were completely platonic in the last movie (which is one of the things I liked) and unless she's grieving and in need of comfort after something happens to Bruce, she's supposedly still with him.

I think that's more of an inference.

Specifically, they introduced a character in Season 2 named Agent Hartley who died in her first appearance. One of the showrunners confirmed the original plan was for Hartley to be gay and Victoria's former girlfriend, but they scrapped that story idea because they felt people would accuse them of homophobia for introducing a gay character only to violently kill her off 30 minutes later.

So if that was their reasoning one could reasonably assume they had similar reasons for avoiding Hand's sexuality as well.

It seems to me the problem with the registration act what that it was about superheroes fighting each other, rather than the superheroes actually fighting the act.

How did Cap actually oppose the act? Did he attempt any peaceful protests?

He did approximately f*ck all when the law was being deliberated - as I mentioned earlier, Stark was the only one actively campaigning against it - but once it became evident the law was going to pass, Cap organized an underground group of superheroes and arranged for fake identities to be given to them so they could just keep doing what they were doing, while also staging prison breakouts of supers that were arrested for their activities.

Cap/Widow Romance

It is hilarious and distressing that the obligatory romance subplot has become such a requisite of storytelling that people just assume the male and female lead are going to hook up by the end of the film no matter what.

I kind of like the interpretation of Howard Stark as a closet homosexual. His marriage to Tony's mother being political makes things make a lot more sense all of the sudden.

[up][up] ... Or he could just be bisexual? He was already a playboy long before meeting Steve, and his interest in those other women seemed pretty legitimate. Plus if he wanted Maria as a beard he would've probably had Tony a lot earlier than he did. He probably decided to settle down because he was getting old and women weren't flocking towards him as much or casual sex lost its appeal.

Love doesn't have to be romantic or sexual although I wouldn't have a problem with Howard being bi and hiding it because society would shun him if word got out.
