Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

[up][up]It was a case of Conflict Ball all around. Maria Hill decides to have armed gunmen corner him and threaten him into agreeing to sign (even though it hasn't been passed yet so WTF). Cap inevitably gets pissed off at literally being told to join her or be shot, so he beats the shit out of the soldiers and busts out of the Helicarrier, which causes him to be declared a fugitive.

And when we say "busts out of the helicarrier", we mean "busts out of the flying helicarrier, lands on a fighter jet, and commandeers it from the outside. So illogical, and so badass.

Just read this. I thought a while back about making this its own works page, but haven't yet.

The fact that the MCU really doesn't have secret identities actually makes the likes of Spider-Man, Daredevil, and possibly Black Panther more interesting. The whole "hiding behind the mask" thing has some legitimate weight here, especially with the mounds of sneaky SHIELD shit that keeps surfacing back up.

Daredevil and co are coming out on Netflix after Ultron - were they written with that in mind, taking place after Ultron as well?

Cause that would be interesting - people starting to do hero work behind masks now that the political climate is starting to get more restrictive and fearful.

Daredevil is coming out in April, isn't it?

EDIT: April 10. Age of Ultron comes out April 22/May 1.

It is? I thought all the Netflix shows were coming out in the fall.

Daredevil comes out April 10th, so before Ultron. I think. I'm fuzzy on where Daredevil fits into the Chronology, aside from taking place some time after Avengers.

I think it was said they don't really have a specific chronology or plan to crossover into the films in order to avoid Continuity Lock-Out.

The films don't include stuff from the shows to a major extent to avoid Continuity Lock-Out. However, the shows themselves are in the films' continuity and timeline, and the events from the movies can and will affect the shows in major ways.

I think they specifically cited the Netflix shows are being a little more closed off than Agents of SHIELD, which is usually impacted by the movies to some degree.

What the hell would a prequel to Iron Man do? He can't be Iron Man yet and it would be set before all the other heroes showed up.

That article keeps using "turned down" like there was an actual role being offered to him that he refused, when they outright say there isn't.

[up]Yeah that was a clickbaity title if I've ever heard it.

[up][up]Are you asking if we knew Iron Man was in Captain America 3? Because we've known that since November.

[up]No, the article mentions the possibility of an Iron Man prequel which is nonsensical.

[up][up][up]

Agreed, by the article's own admission any hypothetical Iron Man 4 was never in production on any meaningful level. The door for one might of been open if he didn't want to do Cap 3 but still wanted to play Iron Man, but I'd hardly considering that "turning down" a role.

According to some sites it's RDJ who approached Marvel for a bigger role in the third Cap movie and Marvel begrudgingly allowed it to become Civil War to accommodate him. While others state that Marvel was the one to come to RDJ requesting that he take a big role in Cap 3 so they could get Civil War off the ground, or else they would've had to switch over to an RDJ-less backup storyline. I'm not sure which set of rumors to believe more at this point.

They gave RDJ a huge sum of money to appear so I'm leaning towards the latter. He'd said as far back as Iron Man 3 that he was worried he was getting too old for these movies and that it might eventually be time to start winding down, so this might have been a compromise. This way he doesn't have to carry the whole film by himself and Marvel still gets its Iron Man.

I fully expect Avengers 3 to be the last appearance of Iron Man even if Tony Stark continues to make small cameos.

So what do you think AOU's RT rating will be? Higher or lower than 83%?

For that matter, will Ant-Man score higher or lower than 67%?

[up][up]Just enjoy the movies and stop worrying about what everyone else thinks.

Marvel's looking for more extras for Civil War for a scene apparently taking place in Africa, and another one involving a bunch of rich people.

Doesn't the Avengers have a 93% tomatometer?? Assuming Age of Ultron is just as well liked, why would it be in the 80s??

Yeah, L, don't fuss too much over scores if you enjoy something.

Ant Man is totes going to be higher than that. I BELIEVE

Oh yeah, I saw the Ant Man poster at my local cinema. It's amazing that Scott is so tiny, and yet if you really look you can make out a surprising amount of detail.

Sorry if this has been talked about already, but Cap 2 ended with Steve and Sam going to look for Bucky. Does that mean there are plans for a seperate Cap movie about the Winter Soldier, because Cap 3 probably won't have room for that story.
