Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

[up][up]So if those rumors are true, I guess Rhodey's not gonna die.

Also, Wasp is gonna be in Civil War? Cool!

[up]x5

While the historical record is a little foggy on the subject, the Russians likely set Moscow on fire in 1812 in order to screw over Napoleon, destroying about 3/4ths of the city.

Now it should be noted that at this point the Russians had evacuated the city, so it's not exactly morally comparable to the World Security Council nuking New York, but it is nonetheless an example of the defenders destroying their own city in order to screw over an invader.

[up] If that is the case it'll probably be the MCU Hope van Dyme Wasp rather then Janet. That's the way the Ant-man trailers seem to be leaning anyways.

Something I've kind of been wondering- I sort of got the impression that to some degree Ant Man was intended to take the place of Spider-Man on the Avengers, and so now that Spider-Man is available, I wonder where that leaves Scott.

I don't think so. The characters have absolutely nothing in common other than the insect theme. Even though they're both everyman types they're still vastly different takes (Scott is a divorced dad while Peter is a nerdy Kid Hero).

[up] Agreed. I can see an argument that had Marvel had Spider-man from the beginning, Ant-man is one of the characters that might not of made it to film by this point (and it took long enough as is), but ultimately they are very different characters.

What I wanna know is why the hell the WSC didn't give the order for the nuke to be shot up into the portal

Nukes aren't designed for hitting small precise targets. Tony had to put all his suit's power into the thrusters so it could make that turn up into the portal.

[up][up][up] Probably not, seeing as the Ant-Man film has been in development for quite some time now and predates the formation of the MCU. It's only taken as long as it has because of Wright's departure and some personal issues regarding a friend of his with cancer. Marvel might have given it a reduced budget and advertising but I doubt they would have done away with it altogether.

Is there a single war in recorded history where one side reacted to losing territory with "let's turn the lost territory into a barren wasteland"? As opposed to "let's turn the territory that was always the enemy's into a barren wasteland"?

I mean, did occupied France try to blow themselves up for the good of Europe? Was that a thing that happened?

It's the bottleneck opportunity that's important here. There has never been a single installation so pivotal to a war as New York. The entire war will be won and lost solely on the question of whether or not the Chitauri take the city.

The WSC is operating on a pretty serious time window. Destroying the portal generator isn't going to remain a Win Condition forever. If the aliens fortify New York, that window closes and the Earth has to fight and win an actual war against an unknown extraterrestial force with uncertain destructive capacity.

Once the invasion has progressed to such a point that the "Blow up the portal and win automatically" option leaves the table forever, the Earth is screwed.

What I wanna know is why the hell the WSC didn't give the order for the nuke to be shot up into the portal, and Stark had to think of that himself.

Because the portal is parallel to the ground, and nobody has nuclear missile silos in the middle of downtown Manhattan pointed straight up.

Nukes aren't designed for hitting small precise targets. Tony had to put all his suit's power into the thrusters so it could make that turn up into the portal.

Which was incredibly daring, I'll note. Nukes don't detonate on impact, they have a timer so as to explode in midair and cause more damage. That nuke could have gone off in his face at any point while he was doing that.

I assume Tony was aware of the timer and factored it into his flight plan.

And even then, the only reason he wasn't vaporized in the detonation was because the portal closed behind him right as the explosion was about to catch up.

Really hope the rumors that Quicksilver dying aren't true. I've heard people clamoring for it because it would be a subversive move on Whedon's part to Gender Flip the Women In Refrigerators trope, but as is kinda suggested on the page, it's not a trope that is only bad because it happens more to women, it's an already often bad (well not always, but it's often a sign of lazy writing in general) trope whose gender bias just makes it even worse. Just like how writing a Damsel Scrappy to be male instead of female isn't that progressive since it doesn't change the fact that you still just made a bad character. Stuffed in the Fridge was renamed to be more gender-neutral for a reason.

For the record I consider Coulson's death in the first movie a borderline case that was still done well enough to not really count as Stuffed in the Fridge, and besides he came back, but at any rate Quicksilver dying at all still heavily runs the risk of rehashing beats from the first film, which would still be a form of lazy writing even if it's not necessarily because he was Stuffed in the Fridge.

Quicksilver dies, and then the Speed Force opens up and vomits out the version from Days of Future Past.

Yes.

Having now watched enough of The Flash to get a feel for him I just want to say that, if anything could put me off Spider-man films, it'd be him. He's like a black hole of charisma.

Neither do I in all honesty, but I just couldn't pass up a lame Flash joke. Or a Spider-Man cameos in the Avengers one tongue.

[up][up] Honestly, I'm more of a Wally West kind of guy, having grown up with him on Justice League, as well as having read a few JLA books. I don't hate Barry (I have little reason to, really), but I'm mostly indifferent towards him.

I've never seen anything with Barry Allen and am more familiar with Wally West through Justice League as well, I just like how he's doing in it.

He accounted for that, luckily. It's hard to see, but when Tony sees the nuke going over Manhattan Bridge a timer shows up on his HUD reading about 4 minutes or so. Apparently he scanned the nuke and could see how much time was left on it. Presumably if there wasn't enough time Tony would have vaporized the nuke or something.

He could build a suit of armor powered by telepathy, so I'd say it's certainly possible for him.
