Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

I like Falcon and his portrayal in the movie quite a lot, but I just don't think he's had enough screentime or character development to be ready for it, at least not in comparison to War Machine. Bucky Cap currently makes more sense from a pure plot perspective. It's pretty obvious he won't stay a sad hobo forever.
@Canid117 Actually there is a very good reason for diversifying the MCU's movie cast that's based entirely on pragmatism and economic reasons. You know how films like Pacific Rim, Big Hero 6, The Maze Runner, and so on did extremely well at the international box office due to their inclusion of prominent Asian characters? Germans Love David Hasselhoff and Mexicans Love Speedy Gonzales is actually a pretty big deal in terms of the box office. Even if the corporate types don't care about being progressive, they should at least realize that diversifying their casts has potent financial benefits.
Diversity is good. I just don't think it should be done through a Race Lift, which I think is the equivalent of bandaging a person dying from heart failure or autoimmune disease. Put priority on adapting interesting nonwhite characters from the source material instead or writing good Canon Foreigners. Not to say Race Lift can never can work though. Being Asian myself, I hereby nominate Iron Fist for this "honor" to wash off that Mighty Whitey stain. Oh, and maybe Spider-Man, just to spite all the hypocrites who say he should be black or Hispanic, but then when someone suggests he should be Asian they come back with all sorts of stupid racist garbage of their own.

As an Asian man, I gotta say that I occasionally feel bad for white guys. It can't be easy being another symbol of Everything that's Wrong with the World.
Uh, I could declare my undying faith that Ant-Man will actually be a worthwhile movie.
Visit my Tumblr! I may say things. The Bureau ProjectYeah I know, Edgar Wright leaving and a not-great first trailer blah blah blah, but I believe, damn it.
Visit my Tumblr! I may say things. The Bureau ProjectI thought it was OK, but it was a little self-serious.
Visit my Tumblr! I may say things. The Bureau ProjectI sorta feel like Marvel could have done better with the trailer just by showing the Comic-Con footage where Ant-Man curbstomped those men-in-black guards. The trailer described the story but didn't do much, in my opinion, to dissipate the public assumption that "Ant-Man is lame because he's small."
Eh, I don't mind that much. Other people have it worse than I do, I think.
Hey, I'm excited for it too! I've shown the trailer to a few people, and they thought it was interesting.
Oh God! Natural light!I have made a better connection to Falcon in one movie than I have made with War Machine in three. I also wouldn't worry too much...most of the current avengers will soon be gone or fade in the background because the contracts of the actors end. Hopefully that will allow characters like Falcon, Black Panther, Black Widow (if the actress sticks around), Captain Marvel and Scarlett Witch to fill the void.
I am pretty excited about Ant-man, too. Not on "I have to be there the day the movie starts" level, but it is definitely on my watchlist for this year.
I'm really hesitant about Ant-Man and Doctor Strange.
They've both done things that kinda dissuade me from being all that excited (Ant-Man killing off Janet before the actual movie, and Doctor Strange having Benedict Cumberbatch, though I'm less upset about that one.)
"It's so hard to be humble, knowing how great I am."I really hope it as well (no pun intended). It would be nice to finally have a superpowered female character in the MCU apart from Lady Sif and Extremis!Pepper, both of whom we did not see a lot (though I have yet to watch Agents of SHIELD).
Whatever your favourite work is, there is a Vocal Minority that considers it the Worst. Whatever. Ever!.
Oh, as of the second season, there is another superpowered female character in Ao S. And there is also Gamora.
To be fair, most of the male heroes are not superpowered either. Only Steve, Bruce and Thor are. All the others have either nice gadgets or special training.

Edit:
Well, I don't think it's "bad" as much as "repetitive".
Anyway, I think that if one of America's virtues is "America is a place where people of many diverse cultures live", then there's a bit of a disconnect when its champion is a white guy in an industry where a large majority of main protagonists - and not just superheroes - are white guys.
