Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

[up][up][up][up]Isn't that typically the case with the majority of MCU movies?

[up][up][up]Nope they were actually competent and helped the Avengers take down AIM. The same story also had a team of heroes from China who helped out as well. [1]

[up][up] Thor and two of the Iron Man movies (one and three) are set not in the release year.

Retroactively, though. It wasn't made clear that they were set in 2011 until 2012.

[up] That's perhaps true for Iron Man 1, but not for the other examples.

[up][up] It wasn't made exactly clear when they occurred. It was made clear that the Incredible Hulk, Thor, and Iron Man 2 all occur at the same time. Coulson leaves for New Mexico in Iron Man 2 to go to Thor's hammer and we see TV footage of the Hulk destroying Harlem in Iron Man 2.

Mm, still like comic Ultron's light-up face better. But I understand why they would refrain from that for the same reason Marquee Alter Ego is a thing, since it's hard for that kind of face to be as expressive in the movie.

@Non-northamerican-continent-superheroes

I would love to see a on going comic book series (Black Pather ideally) dedicated to international 616. But there's not really a point unless the non american super teams are fundimentally different to the Avengers.

A Euro team is interesting just in the notion that heroes from completely independent countries would all share a super hero team. Possibly it's just a response to Doctor DOOM being on their door step, but the politics of the existence of such a thing would be interesting.

Either the heroes do not represent the governments of their countries and they're just the collection of the few super heroes in the continent with international travel convenient enough to justify teaming up. Or they are government backed in which case you;d imagine the countries would put a lot of effort into making sure they have a superhero representative on that team, nd then suddenly there would be all this politics and red tape between the members. Possibly they wouldn't even be allowed to know each other's identities.

Heck, both those ideas could co exist as two different euro super teams.

Honestly it's the second world countries superheroes I'm interested, the Cold War must have been really interesting when the countries had a very limited number of People Of Mass Destruction between them. And what happened to these super heroes after the Cold War ended.

And I'd like to know what's going on with super heroes in the middle east and Arab spring. How does terrorism work when any mutant with a potent power can say 'Fuck it, no more terrorists in my town.''

I'd imagine some groups recruiting Mutants to join their ranks.

I'd expect the fundamentalist groups would probably put a lot of fledgeling metahumans who might resist them on the chopping block for witchcraft, cutting their numbers down.

The funny thing is that some other countries were shown to be way more accepting of mutants than America was.

Terrorists in the 616-verse made suicide bombers out of Stark tech like old pieces of Iron Man armors(big plot point in The Five Nightmares due to the guy supplying them being the son of the dead Iron Monger who was way more like MCU!Killian than the real 616!Killian).

[up][up][up]

Who is to say we wouldn't have metahumans leading the fundamentalist groups? Even a false prophet is a lot harder to argue with when they are backed up by literal superpowers.
