Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

BTW, there is something I was wondering about...the "Stan Lee" channel on Youtube, is that thing genuine? Because if it is, that's pretty awesome. Well, it is awesome either way, because it's nice to get the opportunity to watch all those old cartoons again. But if it's genuine it would be even better. The cynical side of me keeps saying "nah, that's surely just a fan", but a part of me just wants it to be true.

[up]x4 Yep. The trait never existed before the movie entered production(though Drax did get much dumber after he suddenly came back from the dead/Bendis started his books) but since the movie was successful the comics have to change so that if someone who likes the MCU decides to read the comics they won't be turned off by characters acting or looking different.

Wow. That must be incredibly aggravating for comics fans. On behalf of non-comics-readers who watch superhero movies, I apologize.

I was annoyed enough with aspects of Peter Jackson's The Lord Of The Rings films, and even more so with The Hobbit, but if those films caused the books to be retroactively changed to be consistent with the movies...words would be insufficient to express my rage.

When the adaptation is actively causing the source material to be changed, that's just deeply unfair to fans of the original.

On another note, Empire is wrong because neither X Men First Class nor Captain America The Winter Soldier make it into their top 10 superhero movies, and both should be there. As should Chronicle.

Comic personalities change all the time, no need to declare yourself a flag bearer of a non-comic reading fans of the films.

Yeah, I guess that's true. One of the reasons I never got into comics - having the characters spontaneously change personalities from book to book was one of the big things that turned me off the Star Wars Expanded Universe books.

Still, I would think it would be annoying to have characters change based on how they acted in adaptations.

[up]It's not as bad as the time Spider-Man got eaten by a giant, magical spider and then pooped back out just so he could have organic web-shooters.

I've got fanfics for Frozen, Spectacular Spider-Man, Crash Bandicoot, and Spyro the Dragon.

Sometimes it's a good thing. Adaptations can improve on the characters with some frequency.

Alfred Pennyworth was originally a fat and bumbling butler, he was changed to his unfallible, Stiff Upper Lip portrayal after the original Adam West show, General Zod was a fairly irrelevant Superman villain until the second movie's iconic "KNEEEEEEEEEEEEEL BEFORE ZOD!" version made him a household name, so forth.

A lot of things in comics that became popular or iconic are the result of adaptations. Batman's grapple gun came from the Tim Burton movies, Harley Quinn came from Batman: The Animated Series, X-23 came from the X-Men: Evolution TV show, and a whole bunch of other things.

Hell Jimmy Olsen and Kryptonite both originated in the Superman radio show.

[up]x8 Empire's not wrong, the voters were all wrong (apparently). They just counted the votes, it's not their own opinion in this case.

I'm reasonably certain the Secret Wars reboot is being done to make everything more in line with the movies, so that's another example.

Most likely, short of kicking the X-men and Fantastic Four out of continuity.

That was from the Spectacular's tie-in for Avengers Disassembled.

Alfred Pennyworth was originally a fat and bumbling butler, he was changed to his unfallible, Stiff Upper Lip portrayal after the original Adam West show

That was from the serials and hence is before the Adam West show.

I've rarely touched the comics, so it bleeds together. Did Peter "die" and get reborn via cocoon with the organic web shooters, super sticking powers, and claw things when the evil android tried to kill Avengers tower and could talk to machines?

I am not a fan of the organic Web-Shooter. While they seem to solve a problem (how does Spider-man manage to store that much net in tiny shooters), it causes an even bigger problem (how the hell does he manage to produce webbing that fast? And what kind of biological construct would be needed to throw web out of your body with such a force?). It also negates an character trait of Peter Parker. Too many people forget that he is not just a photographer, but has also a deep understanding of science.

Plus, since Spider-man is one of the more powerful fighters, every weakness is a plus, even if it is conveniently (for the plot) empty web shooters.

Not to mention why the webbing conveniently comes out of his wrists instead of his butt.

That RDJ vid is so adorable.

@lordoflore I wonder how MCU fans feel about the comic version of Bucky. Out of all the major characters he's probably gone through the most dramatic changes in terms of overall backstory, design, and personality. Or Thor's, if you consider his lack of personality to be just as significant tongue.

[up]...I'm not sure you know what the word "objectively" means. I'm getting a little sick of people praising that movie like it's the greatest thing of all time. I mean, yes, it was fun and enjoyable, but I thought the way they handled Bucky's character was crap and the HYDRA infiltration plotline was a cheap retcon. The movie had its flaws, is what I'm saying. But I guess I'm "objectively" wrong.

@AlleyOop Bucky was a character nobody really cared about until relatively recently. He was basically considered a dimestore Robin wannabe whose only real contribution to the comics was giving Steve something to sob and angst endlessly about.

It wasn't until Ed Brubaker brought him back as the Winter Soldier that people really started to give a hoot.
