Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

You guys know what I just thought of?

Ok, we know Iron Man's showing up in Civil War, right?

And you guys know how in the comics, one of his regular armors is black with yellow highlights? (Geez, I wish I knew the actual name of that particular armor.)

What if he shows up in Civil War with that black on yellow armor as an "in mourning" thing after the events of "Age of Ultron"? Wouldn't that be friggin' awesome? grin

I wouldn't want Spider-man to start with one of the "big villains"...they can introduce Norman Osborn and Harry now, but not as villains, just as characters which eventually will become villains. Since Peter is supposed to be still a teenager, someone on the level of Chameleon of Kraven the Hunter would be ideal...well known enough, not yet used in any of the other other movies, but also manageable for a Spider-man who isn't as experienced yet.

[up]x17 I'm going to copy paste the 616!Inhumans creation from the wikia so people here have something to compare to:

At the beginning of the Kree-Skrull War, millions of years ago in Earth time, the alien Kree established a station on the planet Uranus, a strategic position between the Kree and Skrull empires. Through their work at this station, they discovered that sentient life on nearby Earth had genetic potential invested in it by the alien Celestials. Intrigued, the Kree began to experiment on Earth's then-primitive Homo Sapiens by splicing Arlok's DNA into Cro-Magnons. Arlok was an Eternal who was a follower of Uranos that had been dissected by the Kree.

Their goal was apparently twofold — to investigate possible ways of circumventing their own evolutionary stagnation, and to create a powerful mutant race of soldiers for use against the Skrulls. However, although their experiments were successful in creating a strain of humanity with extraordinary abilities, the Kree abandoned their experiment for reasons which are not yet clear.

Their test subjects, the Inhumans, went on to form a society of their own, which thrived in seclusion from the rest of humanity and developed advanced technology. Experiments with the mutagenic Terrigen Mist gave them various powers, but also caused lasting genetic damage and deformities. This led to a long-term selective breeding program to try to mitigate the effects of these mutations. Their city of Attilan has frequently been relocated and rested for a long time in the oxygen-bearing Blue Area of the Moon.

The once-secret existence of the race came to light among the general public as the Inhumans interacted more often with many of Earth's superheroes — including the Fantastic Four, the Avengers, and the X-Men — whom they aided against threats such as Galactus, Ultron, Magneto, and Apocalypse.

Edit: God damn it. I was working on a huge post about Iron Man's different armors and the likelihood of us seeing most of them in the movies(with pictures of each of them)but lost it due to my phone deciding to delete it from my Notes when it updated. Time to start all over...

[up] Sorry to hear that. I've never had that problem.

Anyway, this list of Iron Man's armors and the likelihood that we'll see any of them, it had nothing to do with I posted earlier, did it?

Also, that avatar, is that a chibi version of the main girl from Gatchaman Crowds?

[up][up]It had to do with Marvel and Square Enix releasing a Iron Man figure together that had a armor that hasn't showed up in the MCU yet so I thought I should make a list for if people wanted to know more about the armors.

Nope. Chibi!Hakuno Kishinami from Fate/Extra CCC.

Variety did a nice piece on the MCU's marketing and merchandising plans going forward and it seems they're trying to appeal to more women and highlight the individuals more instead of JUST the Avengers.

Women huh? Neat. I hope by that they mean characters like Black Widow get their share of action figures just like the male characters do, and not just things like shampoo, makeup, and perfume type objects which I'm not so interested in.

Turk is gonna be in this? Cool! He was one of my favorite recurring characters in Frank Miller's run.

Gamora would make a great action figure if decked out right. You know, with the daggers and the broadsword (bastard sword?) and all. Though that only really works with comic!Gamora. Movie!Gamora's sword was weird.

So weird. I hate it. I've also really grown used to Gamora's eye ring things. To the point to where Gamora from the movie just looks weird without them. I mean, those little lines are there, but there's a big difference between that and the circles.

So, I got Howard the Duck #1 today. The new one that probably owes its existance to the Got G movie (that's totally justification for talking about this). The cover for issue two is hilarious. Its the Guardians all scrunched in around a very annoyed Howard doing duck face for a picture. Well, everyone except Rocket. He just seems confused.

BOINK

I love comics.

Gamora really, really, really likes big swords most of the time. She had her own personal powerful sword for a long time called Godslayer which she got from Thanos so she could kill Adam Warlock. It broke on Thanos skin when he came back from the dead and killed Phyla-Vell.

Groot uses his own fists, Rocket uses big guns, Drax uses daggers, Angela used dual swords, Star-Lord uses 1 or 2 guns, Phyla used her sword and constructs, Vance used Captain America's shield, Warlock used magic, Mantis used martial arts and her mind much like Moondragon, Cosmo used just his mind and that's about it on what the Guardians usually use for weapons. Probably forgot someone since I'm tired.

Working on that Iron Man Armor post tomorrow. Now sleep time.

I do wish they had used the yellow eye-circles.

I liked Gamora's comic look pre-movie, but I like her movie look as well. Maybe they could incorporate some of the elements of her older design, such as the armor and yellow eyeshadow or w/e in the sequel?

They avoided the whited out eyes for practical reasons. No clue on the circles but maybe they didn't want them to look too much like Drax's facial tattoos.

[up] Nah, he's taking the term "duck face" a bit too literal and is using his hands to imitate a dick's bill. tongue

Every time I look at Howard in that cover, I keep thinking that he's thinking "I am this close to hating you people right now." [lol]

Huh. I don't remember her sword. When did she use it?

So the "takes everything literal" is now a thing in the comics for Drax? It wasn't one before, was it?
