Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Well that depends whether or not the plot will expanded to global or not.

No wait, it doesn't concern him, he's the leader of a free nation, nevermind.

It might. If the existence of the World Security council means that these issues extend beyond simply America, than T'Challa could definitely be affected by it.

My prediction is that the main conflict in Civil War will be about controlling people with special abilities or ability to threaten the world, or even unifying the world under one authority in some way in the wake of both the alien invasion and Ultron's attack, so especially in regards to either of those.

The impression I've gotten from interviews is that the conflict in Civil War is about whether superheroes should be regulated and in return supported by their governments or not. And considering the trailer shows us a massive Hulk vs Hulkbuster fight is going to happen in an African country (Possibly Wakanda) I don't see why Black Panther wouldn't have a stake in the conflict. We already have confirmation that he's in Civil War, I can only assume he's there with purpose. T'Challa isn't the kind of person just to hang about.

MCU's Banner for me is obviously going to be Pro-Reg's side, because given the choice he's not going to turn down the government being responsible for his healthcare and well-being when the alternative is that they continue to seek to abuse his condition for their own needs. That's the thing about accountability; it goes both ways.

Well they've confirmed there are apparently a few different easter eggs for Panther (not just Klaw's appearance in AOU) so maybe what happens in that movie affects his appearance in Civil War. Like if Ultron steals the vibranium for his body from Wakanda or something and as a result Panther shows up like "Okay, which one of you made the killer robot that invaded my country?"

My prediction is that the main conflict in Civil War will be about controlling people with special abilities or ability to threaten the world, or even unifying the world under one authority in some way in the wake of both the alien invasion and Ultron's attack, so especially in regards to either of those.

If Baron Zemo is the villain then I assume it will be an international thing too. Maybe he's even a European politician pushing for hero registration.

That's a point, I still have no idea how Baron Zemo and Crossbones are going to tie into Civil War; they're both confirmed, but I've only speculation what role they'll play.

Possibly opportunist villains who what to take advantage of the situation.

On a different note; is anyone else annoyed that the Let's You And He Fight in this movie between the Hulk and Iron Man is possibly going tobe the result of Scarlet Witch using mind control?

I hate mind control let's you and he fight and I know Whendon does too.

It does raise a good point though; world with both mind control powers and People of Mass Destruction is a very dangerous world indeed. Possibly an issue to bring up in Civil War.

Well, since Wanda's supposedly showing everyone their worst fears, maybe the battle happens entirely in Banner's head? I assume that Bruce is terrified of Hulking out, losing control, and having his BFF Tony have to take him?

[up]I suspect the Hulk fight is gonna cause so much collateral damage that people won't care that it wasn't his fault, and it'll be used as more evidence that superheroes can't be trusted without government control.

Chris Evans continues to be an absolute sweetheart.

Chris Evans is Captain America in real life, too.

[up]If I remember correctly, Pratt and Evans bet in favor of their own hometown hospitals, and it ended up with the two of them visiting both hospitals anyway.

Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.

So, that's adorable.

Star Lord and Captain America, together to make kids happy. And such good sports about it.

Then it turns out that this meeting is canon to the MCU.

[up][up]Well, when it comes down to it, both Cap and Quill are big softies, so if Quill came back to Earth, he'd probably visit some hospitals to make kids happy with a whole "Hey, kids. I'm Han Solo, but REAL" thing, and Cap probably does hospital visits when he's not saving the world or distracting himself so he doesn't brood.

It's entirely possible for them to meet that way.

This, of course, means the Climax of Ao U is just Tony and Rocket revealing they collaborated to make a big enough gun.

Tony and Rocket get in a fight because Tony believes the best weapon is one you have to fire once and Rocket wants to keep firing away.

I just wanna see Rocket next to Tony Stark just to see how surreal it would be.

It might break my willing suspension of disbelief I'm not sure.

I would hate it if they turned Falcon into Captain America, simply because I think that he is a great character who can stand on his own, and his flying skills are pretty nifty. I want him to stand on his own, not as "the other" Captain America. Bucky...perhaps...but honestly, what for? When they call Steve "the Cap" it always feels to me like they refer to the fact that he is "Captain Steve Rogers" and not "Captain America". "Captain America" is a figure for the stage and for history books.

Wouldn't that be in South Africa, since the policemen in that trailer have Galils?

Wakanda's always been an enormous mismatch of African imagery anyways, so it's possible that some of that could be South African imagery in a bit of a modernization.

[up][up][up][up]We need a new Marvel Vs. Capcom game because Rocket was actually in the last one(based on his Dn A!Guardians of the Galaxy appearance) and pretty much every character had a line about how they can't believe they are actually fighting a raccoon.

"You've fought zombies, mutants, tyrants, but nothing's prepared you for....a RACCOON!"

Cockney Rocket is still best Rocket, though I have to give Cooper credit for the fantastic performance.

Also, I'd love to see interactions between Stark and Rocket. You get Stark snarking at being talked down by a rodent, and you get Rocket mocking Stark for his primitive tech.

[up][up]Honestly, if there was one thing I HAD to give Bendis!Guardians of the Galaxy credit for, it was showing how smalltime Tony was compared to the rest of the galaxy and his new teammates outside his armor.

(This wasn't the first time Gamora had sex with a human btw but her former lover was apparently better than Stark since they actually didn't only do it one time in the entire war)
