Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Or the KGB is still active in the Marvelverse.

Whatever your favourite work is, there is a Vocal Minority that considers it the Worst. Whatever. Ever!.

I could have sworn someone mentioned the FSB somewhere along the line so that is unlikely.

Unless I'm imagining things.

All she says is "It looks like I just traded the KGB for HYDRA". That doesn't necessarily mean she went directly from one to the other, and it doesn't explicitly say she had a long career with the KGB. Just that she worked for them, and then worked for SHIELD/HYDRA.

It's easy to take from what she says that "the KGB" is an umbrella term, a category that, for her, encompasses any morally dubious organizations she may have worked for before SHIELD. As for why she'd do that; she probably either didn't want to clutter up the analogy, or spend too much time reflecting on how many bad people she's worked for when she now has to add HYDRA to that same list.

Again, ignoring that nowhere is it said she spent a long time working specifically for the KGB and that she could very well have gone directly from one to the other.

Honestly, I can imagine that in the Marvel verse the KGB existed past 1991 as unofficial underground organisation within the FSB or the SWR. Either that or Natasha's handlers went rogue, making money by using her skills.

Wait why would people be up in arms if Natasha were older than Bruce?

I'm noticing now they said he will have "mind warping arrowheads". I have no idea how that'd work.

[up][up]I don't know, but somehow people have a harder time to wrap their mind around the idea that a woman is the one 15 years older in a relationship than the man. Some people complained that Louis Lane looked too old for Clark in Man of Steel, too.

MCU!Natasha was born in 1984, though.

Men are supposed to be older and taller so we have actors standing on boxes.

Reality doesn't match preconception so we play tricks of perception and feed that preconception.

This is how a rational world works.

But apparently there is no question that young, vibrant Natasha who could have guys built like the Falcon

As opposed to having a guy built like the Hulk?

[up][up][up]People still seem to be operating under the assumption she's Older Than She Looks like in the comics, even though there's little indication that's the case in the films.

As was said Winter Soldier even provided evidence that it's explicitly not the case here.

[up][up] I suppose she might also want more out of a guy than abs so complaining that 'she could get guys built like the Falcon' is a bit weird anyway.

Who knows what Natasha would want in a guy. She may not like military men. Granted, I would prefer her and Hawkeye, but whatever, I ain't writing it.

[up][up]Indeed. I just found it funny to compare Falcon to Hulk in terms of body build.

That's the other thing...Natasha is terrified of the Hulk. Granted, her getting over her fear might be an interesting arc, but does it have to end in romance?

Do we know she's still terrified of him though? That situation stemmed from him attacking and trying to kill her so of course she was visibly shaken and upset, but we don't know if it's lasting enough that she wouldn't ever want to be around him.

Even by the end of the movie she welcomes him when he shows up to help fight the Chitauri.

Found out from our trope pages that Spider Man is supposed to debut in the verse. Can someone explain how that's gonna work? Like is Spider Man getting rebooted again?

Spiderman gets a reboot. Sony and Marvel are doing it as a collaborative work. Spiderman is debuting in a Marvel movie, probably Civil War. Sony still has the rights to Spiderman and gets all the revenue from the Spiderman films. No money changed hands.

Yes. There's going to be a Spider-Man movie (that pushed back Black Panther and Captain Marvel grumblegrumble) made by Sony, but with some oversight from Marvel. And Marvel are now allowed to use Spidey in their movies.

[up][up] Don't cherry pick. They pushed back Thor and Inhumans too.
