Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Well, Thor does come from a culture based on Norse values. I imagine he's killed people for less.

That sure gives a different feeling to his calls for "Another!" after emptying his cup. How many cups has he broken over people's heads?

Seeing as how he's a Nordic warrior prince... a metric fuckton.

He's probably seen more barfights than most people see days in their lives.

We still have yet to see the inevitable drinking contest between Steve, Thor and Tony.

Otherwise known as that time Cap and Thor tricked Tony into nearly dying of alcohol poisoning.

Yeah, that seems rigged in Steve's favor. Steve can't get drunk.

I think having a drinking contest with an alcoholic is otherwise known as "being a terrible, terrible friend".

A Cap vs. Thor drinking contest would be funny just to see how frustrated and/or mystified Thor got when Cap continued to not be drunk.

Thor: WHY AREN'T YOU DRUNK YET?

Steve: I told you. I can't.

Dammit, there's a video I really want to post in response to this, but it doesn't seem to be online anywhere. Alas.

Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.

Is it the cut scene where Thor apologizes to the owner of that cafe?

It's a scene from WKRP in Cincinnati where Johnny Fever, being made to take a drink every so often and immediately follow it with a sobriety test as part of a PSA-type thing, gets increasingly sober, much to the frustration of the cop conducting the tests.

It's not as funny described which is why I want to find that video so badly

The level of damage Thor's Hammer does seems to change either way...so I guess he either can control the force to a certain degree, or the hammer automatically adjusts to what is needed.

What kind of bothers me about the notion of a romance between Bruce and Natasha is the age difference. I mean, he is 15 years older than her - if it were reverse, everyone would be up in arms. But apparently there is no question that young, vibrant Natasha who could have guys built like the Falcon would go for old, broken Bruce Banner. I can't think of a more unlikely pairing other than Natasha/Tony.

[up]Wellll... if the MCU Black Widow program is anything like the comics version Nat might not necessarily be quite as young as she looks. Also, she's surrounded by muscly meatheads in SHIELD for the most part, Banner is something a bit different.

Is Banner 15 years older than her or is Ruffalo 15 years older? In-universe, it could just be his life on the run and constantly trying to maintain a level head and not get angry would be very stressful on him and it could age him a lot.

[up] I have no idea how old the actors are...I am talking about the MCU ages. Bruce's is on his Culver University Card on the "wall of search" in "The incredible Hulk" and Natasha's is mentioned in The Winter Soldier by Armin Zola. I am currently working on my own timeline for the MCU ( http://archiveofourown.org/works/3452657/chapters/7573943 ) and have figured out the ages of the Avengers in addition to it, as far as possible...the one of Thor is a little bit vague, Hawkeyes hasn't been mentioned yet and Tony has three different, none of which actually fit the information given so far.

How'd we get from Steve drinking Thor under the table to talking about the ages of the characters?

Also, I'm worried for Bruce and Natasha. After all, it IS a Whedon movie, romances don't generally end... alive, when he gets involved.

I highly doubt Marvel would ALLOW Whedon to kill off The Hulk. Or Black Widow, since right now she's the only major female superhero in the MCU and the backlash Marvel and Whedon would get back from fans both male and female who like Natasha would be fucking huge.

And if Whedon kills a black superhero in this movie, I'm done with him. He finally goes on my list of shitty writers/directors to avoid at all costs.

I have a sneaking suspicion that the writers haven't decided if Black Widow has a slowed aging process or not.

Or they just failed to pull out a calculator when picking her birthday and saying that she had been an active agent of the KGB.

I don't get the confusion about Black Widow's age. It's perfectly possible for her to have been both born in 1984 and a spy for the KGB. What with it being directly confirmed she was a spy even as a child.

Unless she started at 2 years old she probably had just a few years of training under them. But she talks about the KGB like she had a long career with them before going solo and then finally joining shield.
