Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

The marathon is 25 hours long. I don't think the concept was really meant to be stretched that thin.

Ah, yes, because JACKET AND SKIRT is so wildly imaginative.

You could say about her comics outfit "Ah, yes, because SPANDEX, CAPE, AND HEAD PIECE is so wildly imaginative". The imagination and coolness come not from the sorts of articles of clothing chosen, like a jacket and dress (she is not wearing a skirt, but a dress, they are different), but from the specific choices in what sorts of those articles or how they are combined. Her outfit in Age of Ultron looks really good. The look of that red on black is really nice. Indeed, there's a nice red and black theme to it, with her lipstick matching the red of her jacket and her nail polish matching the black of the rest of her clothes, and the black of most of her clothes really makes the jacket stand out, while allowing us to find interesting parts of the rest of the outfit once we've looked closer. I also love her necklaces in the outfit.

Just nap during the Thor movies. tongue

But the Thor movies are awesome! Especially the first one!

@Swanpride: Oh god. That's even worse. I would not want my first time seeing a movie be while suffering the effects of sleep deprivation.

Thats what stimulant abuse is for.

Besides Iron Man 2 is really the better choice of what to sleep through.

Pff. Back in my day we used to watch every episode of LOST back-to-back to find every interesting bit. We didn't have no sleep, or potty breaks, or the internet, or writing, or language, or communication, or higher brain functions, or brains, or eyes to watch it with, or anything else you young whippersnappers have, so don't be mouthing off about how you have it so rough with your superheroes and whatnot.

Now where in tarnation are those damned memory pills. I keep forgetting where I put them.

Why is everyone reacting negatively to the scene of Cap failing to rescue those cars? That sounds like a great bit of drama to shake Cap's resolve.

Okay, but you have to wait until the courtroom scene is over at least. And you have to be awake when Pepper takes down Justin Hammer.

Sleep through Iron Man 3. It's a quick power nap, and you miss nothing of consequence.

@zam: Hey, fashion is fun, and people messing it up by reducing an outfit like Scarlet Witch's into "jacket and skirt" is just missing the entire point and missing out on all the cool design of the outfit.

I should note, I do have problems with Quicksilver's outfit. That shirt he has is glorious, but those pants are the most boring pants they could've possibly chosen and the grey of the pants and the grey of the shirt do not go well together. They could've also done better with his hair.

I'm confused. Is this movie out April 20th, or May 1st?

Well, I can't speak for everyone, but I'm a little worried that the movie is going to go a little too far into Darker and Edgier territory for my taste, and that scene kind of feeds those worries. I'm not disagreeing with you, though, and I think they could do it right. I'm still excited for the movie regardless.

Maybe we should make a separate thread for Ultron spoilers until the movie's out in all regions?

I will never understand why they release these movies in foreign countries first. It makes no sense.

Its a complicated formula designed to make the most money and cut down on the damage from piracy.

And because Disney seeks to overthrow America by favoring foreign cabals.

The earlier release date in Germany is just because we change the programming one day earlier than the US does for some reason. Not sure why they start in the UK earlier after all, I got the impression that they wanted a parallel start in as many countries as possible. Thankfully. I am still angry that I had to wait two and a half months before I finally could watch Big Hero 6.

That sounds terrifying. Who sleeps in a movie theatre? Wouldn't you be worried about getting robbed? Or kidnapped? Or some Russian spies releasing a chemical agent that causes everyone to become murderously aggresive?

Presumably you'd go to the movie with friends. I also imagine most people would notice a person rummaging through someone else's things.
