Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Ultron has a throne. That sums up the character perfectly for me.

Her current outfit (at least as of last I saw her in Uncanny Avengers) looks fairly iconic, stylish and ridiculous at the same time.

I'm pretty sure there's a medium between "Put everyone in street clothes" and "Put someone in a costume that doesn't work in the context of the movie because that's how they look in the comics".

The biggest hurdle with costumes onscreen is what is the context? If she's basically a psycho super-terrorist working for Ultron why, in-universe, is she gonna say "Know what I need? A red spandex costume with a cape and tiara!"?

With most of the Avengers, there's some sort of story purpose for why they look the way they do.

I saw someone say the falling cars would be a good place for the Falcon cameo.

That would go a long way towards keeping that from being needlessly tragic.

There's failing, and then there's yanking the hero's (and the audience's) chain. Whedon likes to do the latter, but not everyone enjoys it.

I find it hard to believe they'd spoil a scene like that in a trailer. Four of the Avengers can fly and Wanda could catch them with telekinesis so I imagine someone will save them. They might have Cap angsting over failing to do it himself though.

[up] I like that idea, but I'm not sure where they could go with it - if it is an important scene, then I'd like it if they tried to work it into Cap's character arc somehow.

How long is this movie supposed to be? It sounds like there are quite a few plotlines in it. I suppose they have the advantage of not having to worry about the team coming together, since they're together at the beginning.

Wasn't there supposed to be a scene where Wanda makes everyone go through their greatest fears or something? If I'm not making that up, that could also be a possibility for the car scene, exploring Cap's fear of failure or of letting people down. Just a random thought though :V

I'm gonna be really annoyed if all of the dramatic character moments in this movie are just hallucinations made by Wanda.

Now you're jacking Superboy's iconic look.

So, the romance is confirmed (unless it's a very lying trailer). And Natasha gets hexed by Wanda at some point. I wonder if there is a relation.

I expect something or someone will catch the falling cars. Maybe Ultron or Vision.

Also likely a coincidence but interesting nonetheless.

Maybe if that was the Soul Gem...that'd make having more appearances by Vision substantially more difficult, though.

If you try this one, you will fall asleep by the time Age of Ultron is finally on anyway. Honestly, why not do a "phase 1" day followed by a "phase 2" day, allowing the audience to get some sleep in-between?

Yeah. It's a lot like Lord of the Rings marathons- sure, they may sound nice, but by the time you're halfway through Two Towers you'll be too tired to appreciate anything.

That defeats the purpose of a movie marathon. The point is to go in, and just watch movies one after another after another.
