Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Vision! Hooray!

Loved the trailer, the second one probably laid on the grittiness a little too thick, but this one dialed it back a bit and was able to have some fun.

And people thought Tony was controlling the Hulkbuster armor.

Uh-oh.....

[up][up]It was suggested in some of the marketing that the scepter is what gives Ultron sentience.

Yet more fuel for the theory that it's the Mind Gem.

Just saw the trailer

I have, like, the best best geek boner right now.

Everything is beautiful. I squeed in class, audibly.

I want this movie. Widow has some of the best lines in the trailer.

I need this movie yesterday. I need the Blue-Ray, I need personification of this film and make love to it, I need this movie like I need air and water. I need this movie like I need to be made out of carbon.

@kostya It was here.

Envisioned by Tony Stark and Bruce Banner as the cornerstone of a peacekeeping initiative, Ultron is an artificial intelligence being that developed destructive behavior after being connected to a mysterious alien artifact.

I'm hyped for the movie, but I'm still worried about Scarlet Witch being turned into a River Tam expy, because Whedon likes his superpowered ladies infantalized.

Fun fact: Summer Glau was Whedon's first choice to play Wanda before Olsen was cast.

I'm glad we got Olsen. Whedon's Production Posse habits are cute...but I'd rather it not get to the point where he's essentially recycling entire character/actor combos to relives a cancelled show.

Summer would've been cool, yes, but, honestly, I'm absolutely loving Olsen's look, and I don't think Glau would've had a better look, so I'm glad for who we got.

Also, this is a serialed franchise, we've seen before; if an instalment doesn't give us a iconic accurate costume, the next one very well might.

I foresee if Wanda ever gets a focus movie (I would love a Maximoff movie about her, her brother and Vision) she might have a story arc about going full out on the whole witch thing and adapting the iconic look.

if you're going to call yourself Scarlet Witch, you might as well dress for the role you've created for yourself.

But... the iconic looks is stupid. Unless you mean, like, actual witches with the robes and the pointy hat, that could be neat, but red spandex one-piece bathing suit? Nope.

Because the movie version looks better? And it'd be a shame for them to regress to such boring and unimaginative costume design?

A lot of people are very fond of it; and give the argument that removing that from Scarlet Witch makes her come across much younger. (Which is a motivation of Joss, who has described the twins as kids)

Some of the scenes were shaking weirdly...I hope that is just a trailer issue and not the case in the actual movie.

Love the part with all them storming the snowy woods. THAT'S badass.
