Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

If it wasn't that video I posted up toplast page that he was hinting at it's probably him revealing that he's going to cameo in Ant-Man or something.

Dylan O'Brien? That guy from Teen Wolf? Why does everybody and their mother want him to be Peter?

Why not Tyler Posey, the dude who plays the main character in Teen Wolf, instead?

[up][up]I'm not sure why some random dude on Reddit is anymore a reputable source than a shitty gossip site.

Especially when someone claiming to be an ex-Marvel employee was on Reddit the other day spouting some obviously fake spoilers.

Dylan O'Brien? That guy from Teen Wolf? Why does everybody and their mother want him to be Peter?

Fancasters have limited tastes. Remember when everyone was saying Nathan Fillion should be Green Lantern? Or Ant-Man? Or Captain America?

I think he'd be good, as I said before.

I mean, his two biggest roles combined would basically equal a non-powered Spidey, so he seems like a good pick.

So James Gunn held a Q&A on Twitter and someone asked him if he has a favorite superhero. He replied by saying yes and that he'll be introducing said character in Guardians 2.

Now he just posted this. Hmmm....

Well, of all those names which are thrown around, Dylan whoever is the one I like the best, simply because he has the right build and the right hands (yeah, still obsessing over this point), and I think he would have no trouble with the physical part of Spider-man. But I am not particularly passionate about the casting. I trust Marvel that they'll get it right. And if they find a really young, talented actor, I would be totally okay with it. The younger, the better.

There's something I'm confused about in regards to the rights issue. I've heard lots of conflicting reports on which company owns the film rights to the Skrulls. Some people say that Fox completely owns them, while others have said that it's a joint-ownership much like Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch. So I'm pretty confused and I can't find out which one is true. If anyone could help out, that would be appreciated.

They're joint owned.

Marvel only partially owns Skrulls, and also for the record, we don’t own the Badoon either. So people were asking why we have the Sakaarans in the film, we don’t own the Badoon.

Edit: Nevermind. Thanks for the link. Though judging from the article, it sounds like we might not see the Skrulls in the MCU anyway.

So word on IGN is that Drew Goddard is directing and writing the MCU!Spidey movie.

Hope it's fact or hope it's crap?

He did say that, but I generally don't take such statements as absolute truth. It's possible that what he said was true at the time, but plans have changed. Or he may of downplayed the possibility of additional Earth-born heroes so they can have more fun with the reveal down the road.

I've only recently started paying close attention to movie development, but from my experiences in the video game world, these sorts of things happen all the time. If a developer wants to keep something secret, they'll not only say it's not happening but give seemingly valid reasons as to why it's not happening. But then down the road we find out that they were in fact working on it the whole time.

Two dozen articles this morning on who my favorite superhero might be and all of them seem to assume it's a male. What's up with that?
Well, gee, Gunn, I dunno, maybe it's because you once posted an article ranking superheroines by bangability, barely gave Gamora anything to do in Guardians, and have frequently tried to discredit the contributions of the MCU's first female screenwriter? Almost like you've got a reputation for misogyny or something. Weird.

Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.

Gamora had quite a bit of prominence in Got G, actually.

[up]This is a pretty good resource.

[up][up], [up][up][up] YMMV. I personally found her arc and character cliché in a way that couldn't be saved by humor, and don't think she got enough fight scenes.
