Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

I have to give Disney plaudits for Big Hero 6 again, because the actors actually more or less matched the ethnicity of their characters, right down to the half-Japanese lead being played by a half-Japanese actor. It's a pretty big deal because this is animation, which doesn't really rely on physical appearance. Remember, the black kid in Billy and Mandy was played by a white woman.
The characters in BH 6 were pretty typical character archetypes, but they were never really defined by racial stereotypes, so that's cool.

You know, as long as he becomes less of a 70's martial artist stereotype, which is more or less has shaken off in modern times but which is still a basic part of his premise as a character.
Hell, his father in the comics is Fu Manchu (seriously, dafuq?). I figure if he ever does show up they can change that to his father being the Original Mandarin that we were introduced to in the oneshot (it's the gift that gives twice - letting them do the Archnemesis Dad plotline and giving "Hail To The King" an actual point to existing).
Which is why it's probably for the best that Ant Man in the MCU will be Scott Lang. Too many scientists, y'know.
I also wonder sometimes if Cassie Lang showing up is a potential lead in to a Young Avengers thing somewhere down the line.

It's funny you'd say that because making his dad the real Mandarin was how I felt you could handle the situation well. You have the benefit of a Chinese hero and his diverse supporting cast so it's not like you run into the Iron Man problem where it seems like you're singling out the Asian dude to be the bad guy.
And I think at one point they did try to reimagine him as a more modern Jet Li-like character but it didn't take.

As an Asian, 'scientist' is probably the best-case scenario when it comes to stereotypes.
I don't mind everyone thinking that we're geniuses.
I remember that. Was Joss Whedon also attached to that at some point?

Oh, wait, Mantis is Vietnamese-German-Spacebug. That probably partially counts.

If Mantis ever show up in the movies (which I hope she does), I doubt they will keep her human origins. She will be made an alien just like Drax (which will probably be for the best). I guess her actress could be Asian, but not a lot of people will notice if it isn't.

Ok, I just saw winter soldier, very good and all but two questions: how black widow survived the electric shock(really it fried everyone else but she just shurg off) and how her and fury manage to get in the ship to get falcon in time? aside for that two point, very good movie
"My Name is Bolt, Bolt Crank and I dont care if you believe or not"The Widow's sting discs are non-lethal. They just knock you unconscious. As for why she woke up so fast when everyone else has been down and out for at least several minutes its possible they discs have settings and she turned down the intensity of the one she used to short the chest melter.
"War without fire is like sausages without mustard." - Jean Juvénal des UrsinsThere were bits of the new AOU trailer where it looks like she was operated on.

By being smart? Possibly. But there's more to the character than that. Unfortunately if we're disqualifying Asian superheroes on the basis of possessing stereotypical elements, that probably eliminates almost all of them. Most of Marvel and DC's Asian characters tend to be A) Martial artists B) Scientists C) Ninjas or D) Some combination of all three.
