Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

I generally don't care about making a character a minority unless I feel it changes a major aspect of that character in a way that wouldn't make sense.
As for Affirmative-Action Legacy characters I have no issue with them unless they had another identity before that. Falcon becoming the new Cap bugs me not because he's black but because he was a superhero in his own right and now he effectively graduated into being Captain America. It makes it seem like being the Falcon was somehow lesser which is the wrong message to send.
Contrast this with a character like John Stewart. Even though he was replacing a white man he had no existing superhero legacy.
And you can sort of get around it with the Green Lantern Corps because there's a billion of 'em.
My various fanfics. You know what's kind of stupid about Green Lantern?
How all of Sector 2814's Lanterns are from Earth. Are you telling me that in the one-degree wedge of space our Lanterns patrol, there aren't any other sentient species who have someone worthy or a ring? We already have four of the goddamn things, whereas most sectors only get two!

Well, Earth is the center of the DC universe. Humans Are Special and all that bullshit.
Alan Scott isn't part of the corps. Or of that reality anymore.

My various fanfics.Did Simon Baz not actually replace any of them? I've only just started reading everything in the New 52 (up to Month 3; PM me if you want opinions), and Hal isn't technically a part of the Corps anymore, so I thought Baz might just've gotten the fourth ring we had lying around.

Oh, actually, hang on.
Guy is a Red Lantern, and the baddest motherfucker in the universe.
Kyle is the White Lantern, and one of the most powerful beings in existence. He's out in space spreading goodwill and bullshit.
John Stewart is...the compassion one.
So it's just Hal and "Muslim Man" Simon Baz.
My various fanfics.I want more series to have outright alien aliens be major characters, or at least supporting characters. Most series, especially since homaging Star Trek, Star Wars or the older classics like Flash Gordon is considered to be practically obligatory for series set in space, either use totally inhuman beings as gags or antagonists.
Unless, of course, you're a space 4X or RTS - in which case at least one of the races involved will look nothing like humanity.

Are you really saying that being white and male is one of the biggest defining characteristics of Doctor Strange?
"It's so hard to be humble, knowing how great I am."![]()

Technically it would be the opposite of Doctor Strange In Name Only. Pretty sure they'd have to change his name from Stephen to something else if he was female.
Spider-Man 2099?

So I finally got around to watching Big Hero 6.
Its about as fine an animated adaptation of Terminator 2 as I could ask for.
"War without fire is like sausages without mustard." - Jean Juvénal des UrsinsSpider-Man 2211, guys!
He shows up during the inevitable Kang The Conqueror movie, desperately trying to fix the horrific mess the timeline becomes.
Concerning replacing pre-existing characters with new, non-white ones...I am of two minds. I usually dislike it with the highly prolific characters which have been established for ages. Because it doesn't matter if Falcon carries a Shield or not, Captain America will always be Steve Rogers. In fact, Captain America is a great example. Even though multiple characters have taken up the Shield, Steve always comes back in the end. And just changing how a character looks like - I wouldn't like a blonde Superman either, or a Mary Jane Watson who suddenly doesn't have red hair anymore. But with characters who are less established, I think it can work. Nick Fury is a good example, and Captain Marvel is now apparently Carol Danvers for good, while her old title Ms. Marvel has gone to a new character. Still, I like it better if they create new characters who could stand on their own, or elevate pre-existing ones. For the females, they already did so with Black Widow (even if she still hasn't gotten her own movie, at least she is now a mean-stream character) and Peggy Carter (who is now officially Marvel's first female lead). And we shouldn't forget that not only Black Panther, Luke Cage is also in the making. The Inhumans are a great opportunity to add Asian characters to the mix.

And it certainly doesn't help when, instead of actually proving that this new Thor is the old Thor's equal, you just constantly have people either A) Saying she's so much better and cooler than Thor, or B) Laughing about her being a woman before she beats the shit out of them. Every other fucking issue.
