Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

    Original post
Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

I am extremely offended that Vision isn't more prominent and also not shown to be robo-crushing on Wanda while in the throes of robo-angst.

The movie clearly has no respect for the source material.

They're just giving the Ultimates the same amount of respect the Ultimates gave for the 616 universe.

EDIT: I assume. I can't actually see the poster because it's on some sort of blog site.

I don't like that Vision is bathed with the sun behind him. As if he's a goddamn angel from on high here to Deus ex Machina everything.

[up][up][up]Vision crushing on Wanda was 616 canon decades before Ultimates.

Oh, yeah, right forgot. Different though, it was reciprocated in the 616-vese, no robo-angsty necessary.

Wait, did Vision crush on Wanda in Ultimates? I thought that was Ultron? And then he killed her. Because Doom. For some reason.

[up] No, no. He still had robo-angst. Because he was convinced that HE WAS A ROBOT AND COULD NOT FEEL EMOTIONS and that made him very sad. They did both get on the same page eventually.

I love Vision's robot angst. Its so dumb. "I AM AN UNFEELING MACHINE" -breaks not-danger room in a tantrum-

[up]Wanda asked out Vision but Ultron (who was essentially Vision's "brother") became a creepy Stalker with a Crush and eventually murdered her.

Interestingly someone noted Don Cheadle has higher billing as War Machine than Taylor-Johnson and Olsen do as Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch. Perhaps he has a bigger role than initially thought (since he even has two figures in the toy line while Quicksilver has none).

Oh. Wasn't the asking out just a quick throw-away continuity nod?

@Bocaj, Wow, I see the writers had no idea what they were doing there.

Also, I appear to have gotten Ultron and Vision confused because once things get into the Ultimate Universe it stops making any coherent sense, unless it's Ultimate Spider-man.

Look at our obligatory helmetless Iron Man. Don't forget that TONY STARK IS IRON MAN. DON'T FORGET ROBERT DOWNEY JR. IS TONY STARK.

HAVE WE MENTIONED THAT ROBERT DOWNEY JR. IS IN THIS?

At least Cap is technically bigger than he is this time.

Also, obligatory orange/red and blue contrast.

With the 616 Vision I think the writers did know what they were doing. The writing probably didn't live up to it. Vision's early character arc is basically about him coming to terms that he does have human emotions. No surprise since Ultron does too for all his 'superior robot' etc etc.

Usually his temper tantrums are prompted by something. The Avengers fight a villain in the Savage Land that can make men fall in love with her just by her voice but it doesn't work on him so he assumes that HE CANNOT FEEL LOVE and gets all sulky towards Wanda.

After they have hooked up, Wanda is on sabbatical in Europe and Vision is still with the Avengers. Jocasta tries to bond with him saying that they're both lonely and Vision has his temper tantrum because HE IS MOST ASSUREDLY NOT LONELY HE DOES NOT FEEL HUMAN FEELINGS and then he gets a call from Wanda and rushes over to answer it.

That's before John Byrne I think had Vision lose his emotions and become a BEEP BOOP Spock robot. He also had him break up with Wanda?

Yup.

His work on West Coast Avengers[42] (issues #42–57, soon renamed Avengers West Coast) was contingent on his being allowed to do what he called “my Vision story.”[4] The Vision was a long-standing Marvel superhero and member of The Avengers, an android originally created by the villain Ultron constructed with the body of the original Human Torch. The Vision went on to join the team, marry his teammate the Scarlet Witch, and father two children by her. Byrne radically changed this, revealing that Ultron lied about the Vision’s creation. The android Human Torch was found and joined the WCA. The Vision was disassembled and stripped of his emotions. The couple’s twins were revealed to be pieces of the soul of the demon Mephisto.

He worked on West Coast Avengers just to do these things. :|

I keep seeing this complaint everywhere, that the Avengers aren't wearing masks. Do we not get how marketing works? RDJ's portrayal is one of the main things that made Iron Man popular so of course they're gonna emphasize that, along with Chris Evans as Cap.

Yeah, but it's not like people are gonna forget who plays these characters between movies. No one's going to not buy a ticket just because RDJ's face isn't on the poster.

My various fanfics.

It still makes sense to market him on the posters. Let's look at the flip side. Aside from comic fans, is anyone really gonna be adverse to the Avengers not wearing masks and showing off their faces on the poster?

It is kinda weird that they insist on showing Hulk Hulked out and never Mark Ruffalo's real face, though.

@Spash, Ultimate Mysterio is post-Ultimatum which is where I stopped reading and therefore any Ultimate Spider-man after Ultimatum does not count. >_> That's exactly how that works <_<.

@Mukora, Mark Ruffalo's in this movie? tongue

Oh wait, I can't tell who is in this movie, I can't see the poster.

Captain America has had his helmet off in movie posters plenty of times.

@Spash, that's exactly my cutoff too but they happen so close to one another and more people know about Ultimatum that's it's easier to invoke the latter than to try to explain the former.
