Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

It's possible, but a lot depends on how MCU Hank Pym is portrayed and what the precise nature of the MCU Civil War will be. Also since it is Captain America: Civil War, and not Avengers: Civil War, I'd advise people to not count on too many characters appearing beyond who's already been confirmed.

Having said that, I think it could be really interesting if Hank Pym and Scott Lang end up on opposite sides of the Civil War. Not out of any animosity towards each other, but the result of simply falling on different sides of the ideological fence.

Pym is portrayed similar to Stark in the prelude comic where he doesn't trust anyone with his tech.

Of course, who knows how that has changed with age.

That could potentially play into him sharing Tony's view.

I guess that all depends on whether or not he has a real {{My God, What Have I Done?}} moment. It's probably going to take Ultron's creation for Tony to have that moment. If not, then he would actually lean more towards Captain America's side.

Obviously he is sharing his technology with Scott Lang, but there is a difference between sharing his technology with a single, hand-picked successor (and maybe his own daughter before it's all said and done) and allowing the government to have full access to it.

It'd be actually hilarious if Pym ripped Tony one over creating Ultron, especially if at some point he says a variant of "Even at my worst, I'd have never done anything like that!"

Give Pym a little love, y'know? Guy's had to be the bad guy too many times.

Speaking of which, Whedon had this to say on Pym.

Of all the heat I’ve ever taken, not having Hank Pym was one of the bigger things. But the fact of the matter was, Edgar had him first and by virtue of what Edgar was doing, there was no way for me to use him in this. I also thought it was a bridge too far. Ultron needs to be the brainchild of the Avengers, and in the world of the Avengers and the MCU, Tony Stark is that guy. Banner has elements of that guy – we don’t really think of him as being as irresponsible as Tony Stark, but the mother[frick]er tested gamma radiation on himself, with really terrible, way-worse-than-Tony-Stark results. It didn’t make sense to introduce a third scientist, a third sciencetician, to do that. It was hard for me, because I grew up on the comics, to dump that, but at the end of the day, it’s a more interesting relationship between Tony and Ultron if Tony was once like, ‘You know what would be a really great idea?’ They’re doing what they always do – which is jump in headfirst, and then go, ‘Sorry, world!’ But you have to make it their responsibility without just making it their fault.

@ Gaon

It'd be a curious change of pace to see Spider-Man squaring off against the sort of Ancient Conspiracy that the Ten Rings seem to be. Don't know if they can make it work.

If they go with Parker, have Richard and Mary be agents of whatever agency that have beef with the Ten Rings infiltrate them, only for them to end up dead, and that after getting bitten by that spider, Parker ends up becoming Spider-Man to avenge them.

As an aside(since I just got linked to the site in the Comics thread)if anyone wants to see what the most popular comics were in 2014 in terms of sales they just need to check this link(as a general rule the first issue of a book usually does way better than the next issues of the book).

This is just North America.

The List is somewhat depressing on DC's side...I mean, the first 30 are basically a lot of Marvel with a little bit Batman thrown in...not even different titles of DC, just Batman.

To be fair, Scott Snyder's Batman isn't just the best book they're currently putting out. It's one of the best runs a writer's ever had on the character ever. If any DC book deserves high sales, it's currently Batman.

Also Amazing Spider-Man shows up in the top 100 more than Batman.

It's smart, well-written, and Batman's characterization is spot-on, hitting the right balance between being the Dark Knight and the World's Greatest Detective. And Greg Capullo's art is basically perfect.

Snyder's first arc in particular, Court of Owls, is phenomenal. You should read it. Everyone should read it.

[up][up][up]Pretty much everything that isn't the Joker. And even the Joker is a matter of taste, though he's been leaning very close to Villain Sue in Snyder's hands.

OH MY GOD I HATE SNYDER'S JOKER SO MUCH. "Look how scary he is, guys! Look how scary I made The Joker! Isn't it cool how scary he is?? Look! Even Batman's super a-scared of The Joker, and I've made Batman better than everyone!"
