Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

    Original post
Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

[up][up][up]How is that any more ridiculous than a guy that turns into the Jolly Green Giant when he's mad?

I feel like Jolly Green Giant is the wrong comparison for the Hulk, given that he's described as a giant green rage monster, and the Jolly Green Giant is, y'know, jolly.

[up][up]The idea of having a split-personality or super-powerful transformations is kinda timeless. The Hulk is basically half Mr. Hyde and half werewolf. He may look ridiculous but he's grounded in time-tested storytelling tropes.

Ghost Rider is blatantly designed around and inextricable from fads which haven't been particularly mainstream or relevant in years.

I mean, really, Marvel, no one's lit their heads on fire since the seventies. C'mon. tongue

Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.

particularly since Marvel doesn't leave loose ends.

The Leader says hi.

Claims of "the True Mandarin fixes the character!"

It really doesn't. What we got was a hell of a lot better than what we could have gotten by playing the Mandarin and the Ten Rings as introduced in the first Iron Man seriously. In their haste to create this clever allusion to the Ten Rings, Marvel Studios shot themselves in the foot so far as a respectable treatment of the Mandarin character goes.

Even ignoring the Yellow Peril issues, I don't understand why people think that the Mandarin's character would be better off portrayed as a Tinpot Dictator of some terrorist cell squabbling over the Middle-East, whose grand ambition is to rule over a shitty piece of desert for a few years before being killed off by whoever the next warlord is.

What exactly is it about Bin Laden that makes people go, "That. That right there. THAT is the perfect portrayal of the Mandarin. Seeing that played entirely straight would be infinitely better than the fakeout we got."

[up][up][up][up][up] That happened in an issue of West Coast Avengers

Because Ultron had an Ultron building machine to build more Ultrons if he died and the machine registered him as dead when he disappeared for Secret Wars. A new Ultron was built, messed with the Avengers and Pym for a bit and thought 'sigh is this really what my life is?' and decided to bury the hatchet with Pym and maybe try this 'good guy' thing.

But because Pym can't have nice things, the earlier 'less-evolved' Ultron returned and got quite cantankerous that there was another him and destroyed the new Ultron and the Ultron-making computer. And then got destroyed by... lets say Wonder Man.

Edit: Silver Surfer, Night Thrasher, Rocket Racer. Dazzler. Plank Man. Marvel loves their goofy fad characters.

Whedon's right, he does have something good going on with the guys talking to themselves thing. Sounds hilarious.

Also, I'm more inclined to agree with Wack'd about the whole Ghost Rider thing.

He's... I mean come on people, he is way too 90s. And frankly, considering we're doing Dr. Strange he might be too metal for whatever magic they're going to be going for in the MCU.

Ghost Rider started in 1972. A little bit early to be a 90s guy.

He's like Wolverine. He somehow manages to both predate and epitomize the 90's.

Wolverine and Ghost Rider really aren't that '90s at all.

This is '90s. This is '90s. THIS is '90s.

Wolverine and Ghost Rider happen to feature a lot of elements that made them "cool" to the '90s crowd, but neither of them really suffers from '90s design sensibilities.

Fun Fact: When looking for superheroes created in the '90s, I found out that War Machine has only been around since 1992.

The 90s totally loved their guns that were supposed to be cool and badass even though they looked like they belonged in a bad knockoff of Doom.

Seriously, one of the many questions I have for Rob Liefeld is "Have you ever seen a gun before?"

Pretty sure Lifeld and his ilk haven't even seen a human being before.

@Mandarin: I wonder if they could somehow salvage him by making his organization affiliated with Hydra in some way.

[up][up][up][up] Hell, that's being too nice. It actually looks like a gun that could feasibly exist, as opposed to this or this or this.

For a guy who built his career off of loving guns, Liefeld sure does love his laser blasters.

[up] You need to be careful not to milk a concept too far. HYDRA can't be the cause of everything.

The idea of Ultron arguing amongst himselves about which is the real Ultron is a brilliant idea and we should stop all production immediately to make it so.

Adam X's power is setting blood on fire. Which led to an amusing situation in Fear Itself.

I think Ghost Rider could be done though, as a side character probably. The trick is to show him after Dormannu or something so he doesn't seem as weird. A guy using Vengeance and demon stuff isn't that weird if they introduce the magic first.

I wonder if they're going to have Pym show up in Civil War on the Pro-Reg side.
