Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

    Original post
Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

@Corr Terek,

My experience also, as I've said in this thread before. My problem with Garfield!Parker isn't that he doesn't look or dresses like old time Peter. It is just that he definitively doesn't convince as a social outcast bullied kid. People who looked, dressed and talked like him were far from the bottom of the high school social hierarchy.

I think it would be simpler to just make Peggy Sharon's grandmother or great aunt.

Great aunt, please. Nothing is weirder than "You know, if things had worked out, you would have been my granddaughter."

Grandmother is much worse than great aunt.

What kills me about the Ultimate Scarlet Witch/Quicksilver incest is that I won't be able to complain about the stupid ship because for once it actually has precedent in the source material.

I've got fanfics for Frozen, Spectacular Spider-Man, Crash Bandicoot, and Spyro the Dragon.

Being in the source material doesn't mean it's a good idea.

Unless it's the Thanoscopter. In which case being in the source material is the only reason it's a good idea.

[up][up]In fact, in this case it's a pretty effing horrible idea. But that's not gonna stop the shippers from playing the "It was in the Ulitmate Universe!" card.

Actually, better yet, I predict a lot of, "Wait, you mean they were actually incestuous in one of those comical book things the movies are slightly based on? Huh, neat. That's just like in my fanfic."

Really, the only thing to take away from this is that everyone's high school experience was different and finding the appropriate niche for Peter Parker to be an outcast in is more difficult than it seems.

I've also noticed that writers seem to have really weird ideas about how high school works in general, so I guess that's just the nature of the medium.

....I don't really think anybody actually ships Wanda/Pieto, since, y'know, incest is terrible.

Tell them that's the same parallel universe where Mr. Fantastic became Dr. Doom, the Blob ate the Wasp's warm remains, the Hulk has raped people and Sabretooth and Red Skull are Wolverine and Captain America's respective sons. That'll either shut them up or, if they love it all, make clear you just should warily and slowy walk very, very, very far from them.

Is not there an Internet rule that says that if two characters exist, then there exist ship fics of them, no exception ?

Being popular in high school ultimately has nothing to do with the hobbies you follow or the way you dress, and everything to do with your people skills. I don't care that Andrew Garfield's high school scenes portrayed Peter as a skater with Twilight hair. I care that he is repeatedly shown to stammer and stumble in conversations, he fidgets uncomfortably in his chair, and he stands up to the Popular Kids but doesn't do it very well.

Peter may have "cool traits" but he's socially awkward and that's all it takes to make an outcast.

Actually, Mr. Fantastic becoming Doctor Doom sounds like it could be interesting.

I mean, I'm sure they screwed it up royally, and the rest of the stuff you mentioned blows, but that one at least has the potential to be a cool departure from the regular universe.

They should at least mention that in A.K.A Jessica Jones when it starts airing on Netflix. tongue

Oh, I think Reed becoming a villain makes for a good twist (Planetary basically does that excelently), but he shouldn't be Doom. Because Doom is, as much as I don't like him personally, an objectively 'good' villain who deserves being his own entity, not just another legacy mantle to be assumed (and yes, I'm aware of the irony of this still being appliable to Mr. It Was a Doombot himself). Give Reed his own villainous identity if you're going there.

It wouldn't have happened anyway if only Victor Van Damme hadn't started so weakly compared to 616 Doom.

Victor van Damme was flawed as a concept from the moment of his introduction.

Doom has a perfectly good name. He's Victor von Doom, PHD. The PHD may be self-applied, but that doesn't change the fact that his actual name is Doctor Doom. He's called Doom because his name is Doom. It makes sense.

"Van Damme" was an attempt to make Doom's name more realistic by changing it to a more common name - which, for me, became even funnier when I once had a job interview by a woman named Lucy Doom - but that actually weakens the name Doom by making it a personal choice. 616 Doom is called Doom because he's DOOM. Ultimate Doom is called Doom because he one day went, "I want to be called DOCTOR DOOM because that is a reasonable thing to insist upon and not something an emo teenager would think is cool!"

Tip to all adaptation writers: quit trying to "fix" things by making them stupider.
