Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

[up]That's pretty much my experience as well. Maybe they could capitalize on that and make Peter and Miles play the two respective types of rejects?

What MCU movies doesn't have a romantic sub-plot?

Guardians of the Galaxy, The Winter Soldier, and Avengers are the only ones.

[up][up]The Avengers was going to have one with Cap and a civilian, but it was cut. Does that count?

[up]Pretty sure I picked up on a little something between Star Lord/Gamora and Steve/Sharon Carter...

[up]It was? I'm guessing it was with that girl he saved.

There was some ship teasing but they never actually had Gamora and Quill hook up. Hopefully they don't reverse that in the next movie.

Speaking of Cap, The Winter Soldier did not have much of a romantic subplot either.

[nja] Will you stop posting and editing while I'm typing!

There may have been some romantic (or UST) vibes in those movies, but it was not enough to be called a subplot. You could have removed it without any impact on the story.

[up]It was still there, though. Cap wanted a girlfriend, but he was too busy, and there were a couple scenes of him with Sharon Carter to hint at something between them in the future. There was mercifully a lot less romance than most of the other movies, though.

I've got fanfics for Frozen, Spectacular Spider-Man, Crash Bandicoot, and Spyro the Dragon.

Sharon Carter?

Is she related to Peggy at all? That'd be... weird.

Peggy's niece, yes.

In the comics, I mean. They never actually use her last name in the movie, so she might not be.

[up][up][up]I was under the impression that it was less Cap wanting a girlfriend and more Black Widow playing matchmaker. Cap seems pretty much Married to the Job in the Winter Soldier (also, I'm not quite sure how much time passed since he was thawed, but it may be possible that he's still getting over Peggy).

I wonder, how well known was Steve relationship with Peggy ? Because that may have been a bit strange from SHIELD to affect an agent to someone who had a crush on her aunt - and Shannon's flirting with Cap becomes really weird if she was aware of it.

There was a contingent of the fandom that was super pissed that they didn't have have Hayley Atwell play Sharon with a blonde wig. I thought that would have been creepy.

The entire SSR knew about Peggy's relationship with Steve, and the general public knew well enough for her to have a stand-in in radio dramas.

Yeah....the idea of Cap dating his long lost love's...substantially much younger niece is weird, especially in the MCU, when present day, Peggy is most likely in her 90s.

EDIT: I mean, how the hell would MCU Sharon being Peggy's niece work out anyway? Sharon's like, much younger than you'd expect Peggy Carter's niece to be.

Sharon Carter had the disadvantage of being a character in the unchanging abyss of comic book modern day that has a definite link to a specific point in the past. Some day, even niece will be pushing it too much and then they'll have to retcon again. Thankfully the MCU wouldn't have that problem as it is forced to accept time's passing but it's still interesting.

I wonder if this is more or less weird than the Twincest between Wanda and Pietro in the ultimate universe.

Should we bring up how weird Ultron's "family" is in the comics? Or Tony's secret past or him being replaced?

[up]x4 Way less for me as well (though given how many fanfics like to ship related characters I sometimes wonder who exactly does that).

Besides, Shannon should indeed be closer in age to Peggy's great-niece with the MCU timeline, unless the Carters had a very strange family tree.
