Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

You know, if it is going to be Peter Parker again, and they aren't bringing Andrew Garfield back, I still want Josh Keaton.

The comics tend to flipflop on whether Latveria is a horrible dystopia where the citizens are afraid of Doom or an advanced kingdom where the citizens love Doom.

I think both things are true at once; like many an abused spouse will tell you, fear and love aren't mutually contradictory, and almost all countries have areas that are very advanced and others that are very, very backwater.

[up][up]That'll happen the day we get live action Kevin Conroy as Batman and Mark Hamill as Joker. I know they don't all look the part, exactly, but maybe... maybe they can just dub over another actor...? *wistful sigh*

Can the new Spider-Man be like this please?

People keep arguing over Peter and Miles and I keep thinking... Why can't we have both?

[up][up][up] Maybe they'll do the Iron Spider, and Josh Keaton can play Peter's version of J.A.R.V.I.S.

It'd be fun if MCU Peter had what is essentially Spectacular's setting and surroundings (which is pretty close to his comics setting anyway), right down to Spectacular inspired designs for some of the characters (like Electro). It's unlikely, sure, but I can dream can't I?

[up][up] I would be perfectly happy having both, and I'm sure many would as well.

The issue is that the voices on the internet campaigning for Miles don't just want Miles. They want Miles to be the star, the focus. And if you have both, everyone knows Parker's going to take center stage.

I think there could be a good balance for co-leads if its written well. Have Pete's origin be unspoken and alluded to while Miles happens in the forefront, both of them overcome Kingpin/Osborne/Doc Ock/Whoever as the Big Bad with Prowler as The Dragon manipulating Miles, while Pete has the token romance with MJ (Or Gwen).

Just seeing Spidey, whoever he is, just hanging out (heh) with other heroes (or anti-villains) would be cool.

I also hear Dylan O'Brien may be the new Spidey. I liked him in The Maze Runner which, as you can imagine, had a lot of running and badass parkour in it. His Teen Wolf character also reads a lot like a non-powered Peter Parker (genius dude who uses quick-witted sarcasm as a defense).

I think he'd be a good Spidey.

I would also like no It's Not You, It's My Enemies this time around. Like if Peter tries to say it MJ (Or Gwen) just shuts him down instantly with a "No, we're not doing that." and he shrugs his shoulders and and goes "Alright."

Also the love interest and possibly Aunt May being in on Pete's secret would be nice.

[up]They are from Ultimate Spider-Man [lol] At least Aunt May and MJ being Secret Keepers. Also I may just be tired of seeing Peter break up with his girlfriends for the same reason, it was the entire plot of Spider-Man 2 and a major subplot of Amazing Spider-Man 2. We don't need it a third time right?

Of course if its another origin story we're gonna have to see Uncle Ben die again which I'm not really looking forward to either.

So with Spider Man movies also sharing the same universe, do you think that Marvel films are saturating the market a bit too much? As some have said, to paraphrase, there are about one or two every single year, with most having similar plot details and prolonged fight scenes. Some are even calling the MCU the COD of films.

Marvel's aware of it, hence the new incoming properties. Hopefully the sharing of Spider-Man will actually mean less saturation, since now Marvel has one less competitor. I'd say the saturation effect is going to depend on how well DC's films do, and if it gets successful enough to mass-adapt properties like Marvel has.

[up][up]As long as they are enjoyable, I don't mind, personally.

I really don't think Miles Morales has any chance of appearing on screen anytime soon. The MCU movies aim to appeal at everyone, not only the comic buffs, and I'm pretty sure that if you ask ten random persons on the street who Spiderman is, you won't get many who answer Miles (heck, I probably would not, and I'm a geek).

BUT we may be able to hope for some cameo of the character, such as Peter passing by a black kid credited as "Miles", or having "M. Morales" appear in a list of names that flashes by a few seconds on screen (such as the list of ennemies of HYDRA in Captain America 2).

And this list would also contain a D. Green and J. Walters to make me happy

As long as the MCU movies don't repeat the same plot again and again (which they don't) I don't see a problem. The characters evolve, keeping things interesting. I am not sure about the other offerings, though. It is only a matter of time before X-men has to be rebooted properly.

Thor is a fantastic movie, so I don't know what point you're getting at. [lol]
