Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Just because they're doing one now doesn't mean they will now do it all the time.

It's supposed to be better than this. That's why this is so frustrating and disappointing.

"It's very easy to un-marry a character, or fix something like that: you just do a huge universal retcon, and say a few events in history didn't happen. But that's really not the way we do it here at Marvel." ~Joey Quesada, before doing exactly that.

This is One More Day for the entire franchise.

Hey, if Tim Drake can be Red Robin while Damian Wayne is Robin, then Miles can be Scarlet Spider.

If there can be two Hawkeyes, there can also be two Spider-Mans (Spider-Men?)

Otherwise, they could do an Ant-Man thing and try to scorer the dictionary for various types of spiders/spider related terms.

Or else, Peter is the Amazing or Spectacular Spider-Man and Miles is the Ultimate Spider-Man.

[up] His costume isn't scarlet though.

I shall retain hope that its not a company wide reboot.

If they just incorporate elements by jamming the ultimate universe in, its no worse than say *shudder* One More Day or any of the terrible life choices Scarlet Witch constantly makes.

Let's be honest—this isn't happening for writing reasons. I'm sure most of the folks at Marvel would be content to keep puttering on.

It's happening because the movies are popular, and the comics industry is in the crapper and has been for a while now. The movies have the potential to be a good gateway, but they're incredibly different entities from the movies, and often in ways that are alienating and off-putting. God knows I've never felt tempted to pick up an Iron Man or Captain America book, despite loving both characters on-screen. The Guardians barely resemble their comic-book selves.

You can only keep nipping and tucking for so long before a reboot becomes the more appealing option. And so long as none of the writers pull a "I liked this thing from the old world so I'm gonna drag it back in"—or at least if it doesn't happen a hundred million times until they may as well have not rebooted at all—I'm cool with it.

Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.

[up][up] Wait, isn't Spider-Gwen supposed to be getting her own series?

...Does that mean that Gwen Stacy will be alive and well again in the new universe?

[up]I certainly hope so. The fact that Marvel really, genuinely feels that one of their best known female supporting cast members is more interesting as something for Spider-Man to mope over than as an actual person with thoughts and feelings has been one of the most appalling things about them for a good long time.

Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.

Wait, a possibility exists that Gwen will be alive and not have been horrifically Fridged and may also be written as an entertaining and likable character as has been the trend in her adaptational appearances such as the Spectacular cartoon, the Amazing movies, and the AU Spider-Gwen?

...

I suddenly recant all of my complaints and fully support this reboot.

I mean, I can acknowledge the importance of Gwen's death and the impact it had, and maybe even respect that, but...it's been what, over 40 years? Might be time to shake things up a bit on that front.

@Wack'd, It makes sense, but it could start a precedent.

I mean now that they've had a shot of the reboot we don't know if they'll be tempted for more. They've been clean this long, but what if that one taste, one toke of Reboot, and it's all downhill from there and they start using reboot for everything, man!?

Can't decide if a story where Dr. Doom is Dead simultaneously running with one where he's turned the Moon into his universe conquering spaceship? We'll hit up some reboot. The Furys giving you problems? get the cocaine grinder, we're going to get us some more reboot!

We gotta take a stand, stage an intervention! We can't have Marvel sitting in their apartment scribbling nonsensically day in and ay out, alienating all their friends, their family, and co-workers, waiting to get their next fix? This has to be nipped at the bud!

Spider-Gwen is already alive and running around doing Spider-Hero things. Spider-Gwen is a Gwen Stacey, but not the Gwen Stacey that died all those years ago. And with her own series having just started and is not 616 or Ultimate, I don't think they will be changing her origins so soon in this Secret Wars thing, and so the whole bridge event with 616!Gwen will not be undone.

Looking in mostly as a comics outsider, it seems like part of the issue is that they have these Spider-characters that are well liked, but exist in a different reality than main universe Peter. They couldn't resist having them pair up with Peter, which is why there's been these inter-universe crossovers. And the next step is naturally to make it so they are in the same universe.

I'm worried about the Squirrel Girl, the Ms Marvel, the Captain Marvel, the Thor and the other such things I'm reading.

@Mousa: They've been doing small reboots like that forever. It was never a thing that didn't happen.

Yeah. "The Night Gwen Stacy Died", I think, has reached the point where it's done all the good it can do for the industry and needs to be excised before it becomes more of a cancer than it already is.

I'm worried about the Squirrel Girl, the Ms Marvel, the Captain Marvel, the Thor and the other such things I'm reading.
Well, Ms. Marvel is literally the highest-selling comic in America right now, and Captain Marvel has a movie on the way, so I doubt there's any need to panic about that.

Squirrel Girl isn't and never was going to last long. It never does. I'll be pleasantly surprised if I'm wrong, though.

Thor is almost definitely gonna go poof in time for Ragnarok, unfortunately, reboot or not.

I really liked Spider-Verse (it had its flaws but the various spiders interacting with each other was a highlight) so I'd be cool if they put some more Spider characters into the main 'verse. Miles and Gwen are very cool. Miguel's fun too but he really needs a time-travel plot or his own series to be relevant.

We need something like "The Day Gwen Stacy Was Turned Into A Horrible Brain-sucking Mutant."

That'd be cool.

@Really, Bocaj? You Couldn't help extend my horribly wrought and humorous joke of making reboots into Marvel's gateway drug with your typical and extremely hilarious humor? Come on man, throw me a bone, I thought that diatribe was at least slightly humorous in it's exaggeration!

@Karkat, See several psots above.

@Wack'd, Ah yes, that issue did a very good job of making a character I came to really like die in a horribly pointless and gruesome way by random Carnage. And then they brought her back in a story that was showing the series was going downhill.

Well I mean the art shift was showing that the series was going downhill but the night Gwen Stacy came back was the biggest amount of proof.
