Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Grant Gustin's Flash basically is Peter Parker.

I don't see it. Even if he were available I expect them to pick someone younger for the role. Plus, the guy has become a little bit stocky lately. They need an actor with really long, small fingers.

Does this mean we might not get an Aunt May movie sad?

Is this a Jo Jo reference?

[up] I am beginning to think that the phrase "Aunt May Movie" should be added to the urban dictionary.

Related to the announcement, I had been thinking during a previous conversation of who might be cast as the "Superior Foes" if they were lucky enough to get a film. Here's my thoughts:

  • Boomerang- Joel Mc Hale
  • Speed Demon- Aaron Paul
  • Shocker- No idea- who looks like a B-part gangster from a 1940's movie?
  • Beetle- Melissa Fumero or Rashida Jones (the latter more so if she takes over the late Victoria Hand's role in a Dark Avengers type thingy)
  • Overdrive- Luke Youngblood or Donald Glover (although he'll hopefully be playing Spider-Man wink)

I saw Joel McHale and my mind immediately went to "cast all the leads of Community in Superior Foes."

Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.

Considering Matt Murdock and Shulk are heroes, there really aren't enough evil lawyers in the universe; I'm glad the MCU has reclaimed one.

Since everything is so Spider-Man focused today I've had this linked to me something like 20 times on Twitter so now you need to see it too:

Yeah, Toei Spider Man is pretty cool. He (and Leopardon the giant robot) recently turned up in the Spider-verse event.

I support your theory. Rashida Jones is awesome. No, no, wait. Aubrey Plaza said that she wants to be She-Hulk. PARKS AND RECREATION CAST as heroes/villains!!! Amy Poehler could be Squirrel Girl.

I still think that the Civil War will start in CA 3, not end there. I actually expect it to end in Infinity War 1, when a common enemy will force the heroes to work through their differences. Which means that there is a lot of time to establish Spider-man.

I doubt it. I think it's more likely we will get something like the comics where Civil War itself is over but in the ensuing stories there's still the matter of the act being enforced, which would make certain heroes fugitives.

With Inhumans pushed after Infinity War Part 2 by the release date shuffle, I wonder how that's going to impact the story of Infinity War. I've been working under the assumption that the Inhumans movie would be the first time we'd meet the royal family and see Attilan in all it's glory. But with it being pushed after Infinity War Part 2, I wonder if that's still the case. With some of the underlying concepts of the Inhumans potentially being introduced in Age of Ultron, there should be enough buildup in other movies even excluding what's happening on Agents of SHIELD.

I think they could still debut them elsewhere and then make the movie their origin story. That's presumably what they're already doing with Black Panther and it was rumored they MIGHT do that with Captain Marvel as well.

....I don't know how I feel about this. On the one hand, I really loved Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker/Spider-Man. On the other hand, I'm glad that the Amazing Spider-Man series is finally dead because TASM 2 had a terrible, incoherent plot and I hated that Gwen was killed off.

Also, fuck Richard Parker being alive in that deleted scene. Fuck that.

Booster Gold is from the future.

And the vast majority of science fiction tells me that the majority of the population of the future is white but a single other story said that far enough in the future and everyone would be a creamy mix of everything (indeed the plot was that WHITE PEOPLE WERE GOING EXTINCT AND HAD TO BE BRED IN ZOOS as well as other races so yeah...)

I mean, I felt it was more along the lines of both are obsessed with celebrity, status, and wealth, and are willing to do unethical things to obtain them—even though Booster has obviously developed beyond that, that's his ground point, what he's like in his origin.

But yeah, also the gadgets. DJ Roomba as Skeets!

On the subject of Parks and Recreation, I think that Nick Offerman would make a great J. Jonah Jameson.

RE Aubery Plaza, she kind of has too much of a set persona/typecasting such that every character she plays is "Aubery Plaza".
